Craolfar eagrán speisialta den Saol Ó Dheas Dé hAoine mar a mbeidh Gearóid Cheaist Ó Catháin le clos, a saolaíodh sa Bhlascaod Mór i 1947. Bhí sé ar an t-aon leanbh san oileán, rud a ghnóthaigh an teideal "The Lonliest Boy in the World" do. Cas @RTERnaG ar a 12.10 Dé hAoine 27ú.

During the first airing of my Star Trek series where a kiss was objectionable; many southern stations pulled the episode & condemned the show. Using today’s vernacular it would absolutely be called“woke DEI crap”because it went against “norms” of society for its time. Not a lot seems to have changed.🤷🏼😑

The “controversial” opinion in question.

@dirkbbasher @Mr_Husky1 A prescription is required for the insulin used by Type 1 diabetics. It shouldn’t be, but it is. You cannot get analog insulin (humalog/novolog/lantus/levemir/basaglar) without one. It’s nonsensical but true.

It amazes me how mad people get AT ME for pointing out the fucking harsh reality Type 1 diabetics in the US face. Get mad at Pharma for creating the system, not at me for calling them (and you!) the fuck out for blatant lies that affect whether I live or die. Thanks!

Famously (there is a beautiful Works in Progress piece on this) in 2016, Geoffrey Hinton told an audience in Toronto that medical schools should stop training radiologists, since AI would soon outperform them at reading scans. Ten years later, there are more radiologists than ever, and they earn more than they did then. Hinton was right about the task, but he was wrong (so far!) on the future of the radiology profession. Times have never been better for them. The gap between those two claims, the difference between tasks and jobs, is the subject of a paper I have written with Jin Li and Yanhui Wu, and that we release today: "Weak Bundle, Strong Bundle: How AI Redraws Job Boundaries." (Very relatedly we are also finishing the first draft of our book "Messy Jobs" on AI and Jobs!! You will be the first to hear). We start from the observation that the growing literature on AI and labor markets measures the AI shock by task exposure: people count how many tasks AI can perform in a given occupation AI can perform, and infer that more exposure means more displacement. Eloundou et al. published a paper in Science in 2024 that started this literature, and many follow the same logic. The inference they make is that the more exposed tasks, the worse the outcomes. This is incomplete, because labor markets price jobs, not tasks. A radiologist does not just sell image classification, but does many other jobs: triages cases, communicates with other physicians, trains residents, makes the difficult decisions, and signs a diagnosis. The market buys a bundled service. The question AI poses is not whether it can do one task inside the bundle. The question is whether that task can be pulled out. At last, an intelligent piece about Kneecap. In reporting what they say and think in a straightforward manner, Miranda Sawyer, in The Observer, presents them as thoughtful as well as iconoclastic and funny. Worth the read if you can access it observer.co.uk/culture/interv…

Tar éis tréimhse taighde dhá bhliain tá Joy Uí Shiodhcháin tar éis teacht ar na chéad samplaí de fhlóra a bhailíodh riamh ar na Blascaodaí nuair a bhí Richard Manliffe Barrington ar an oileáin sa bhliain 1880.

An pharáid sa Daingean roimh bhreacadh an lae ag 6am... Traidisiún a théann siar dtí Cogadh na Talún sna 1880í nuair a chuir a Sasanach cosc ar mháirseáil idir éirí agus luí na gréine... ach bhí muintir an Daingin seiftiúil agus chuadar amach roimh éirí na gréine!

Like how hard would it be to make a biosimilar in the US? Or sell it at a reasonable profit? Oh - rhetorical questions, my bad.

@whoisthatonekid @Kidfears99 So far so good on kirsty. 6 mos. Malaysian, so who knows how long it’ll be cheaper as shipping costs increase. And I do wonder about the cold chain to get it to the DC burbs. I’m exceedingly lucky that changes in brands (on my 3rd glargine, tyvm KP MAS) don’t seem to affect me.
