My thoughts on Kentucky Basketball's need for a GM/Front Office... +Yes, it is necessary given the current landscape. The title(s) is/are irrelevant, but the roles/duties have to get accomplished and probably need to live outside the scope of the "traditional staff." +This isn't just a single hire that suddenly fixes all "problems." In order to do the job at the level/standard of Kentucky Basketball it requires a staff. Below is how I would structure the Kentucky Basketball Front Office, Version 1.0. 1) "Executive Program Director" - This person has no real role in recruiting/evaluating. They are at the finishing table. Contract negotiations. Handle the "business side" of things. In theory, they require minimal basketball experience...but think of a traditional NBA Front Office type person. Helpful in "retention deals" as well making sure current players are set for next season. Taking calls during back-and-forth negotiations. Can help consult on how/where to spend money while managing the overall budget. 2) "Director of NIL, Brands, and Player Procurement" - This person has more of an AAU/NIL/Nike background. Knows the movers and shakers. Has the relationships. Understands the inner workings of the basketball landscape. Still not necessarily recruiting/evaluating, but handling the on-going conversations about NIL prior to the finishing table. Help field questions from families of current players about deals for next season. Involved in some back-channeling conversations of who may be available in the portal. Maintain and build relationships with the families throughout the process. Serve as a liaison for all non-basketball questions/discussions throughout the process. Again, probably someone with an AAU/NIL/Nike background. 3) "Player Evaluation Coordinator" - This person isn't public-facing at all. They grind Synergy and help to build a list of potential prospects (specifically transfer portal). Their job is to cast the wide net, see everyone, and then bring a smaller list to the staff when the time is right. 4) "Player Evaluation Graduation Assistant" - GA for the above position. I think this structure covers all of your basis without really stepping on the toes of the coaching staff. They are the experts when it comes to basketball/recruiting. In theory, they don't need help in those areas. The front office handles the business side, takes non-basketball things off of the staff's plate, and allows them to focus on what they SHOULD be focusing on to an even greater degree. Win Win.
