Senator Dr. Elon Thompson @drelonbthompson made it clear that while criticism is part of public life and democracy, no Jamaican should be subjected to cruelty, humiliation, or coordinated digital abuse. Freedom of expression must never become an excuse to dehumanize others.

Today marks five years since the establishment of the Urology Service at Spanish Town Hospital. Over that time, we have completed nearly 1,500 surgical procedures and provided outpatient care to thousands of patients across St. Catherine and surrounding communities. This milestone is not mine alone. I extend sincere gratitude to my dedicated team and supportive colleagues whose commitment, skill, and resilience have made this service possible and impactful for the people we serve. Over the past five years, we have achieved several important firsts and milestones at the institution. In January 2022, we performed the first radical cystectomy for bladder cancer. In September 2023, the first laparoscopic nephrectomy was successfully completed. Additionally, we have carried out over 60 radical prostatectomies, significantly improving outcomes and quality of life for patients with prostate cancer. In July 2025, the service was further strengthened with the acquisition of a laser machine, allowing us to perform minimally invasive surgeries for kidney stones and expand access to advanced urologic care. This was made possible by grant funding from the National Health Fund (NHF). These achievements represent more than numbers, they reflect lives changed, families supported, and a growing standard of care within our public health system. As we look ahead, our commitment remains steadfast: to continue expanding access, advancing surgical care, and delivering excellence in urology for the people of St. Catherine and beyond.

In the Senate I spoke about the transition in our public health system. I’ve worked alongside many of the Cuban healthcare professionals. I know their names. I know their service. I acknowledge the role they played in caring for our people. As we move forward, this is about balance. Managing the transition responsibly while strengthening our own capacity for the future. Measures are already in place to protect critical services, support our health workers, and ensure continuity of care. This is not politics. This is about people, patients, and a system we must get right.

Senator Keith Duncan has expressed full support for the budget. He reasons that now is the time to chart the course for rebuilding Jamaica smarter after Hurricane Melissa and laying the foundation for growth.

Senator Morgan chided Opposition Leader Mark Golding for complaining about alleged inefficiency in tax revenue collection but failing to take action against his Region 3 Chairman, MP Dennis Gordon, who's company is at the centre of a tax evasion scandal.

Senator Sinclair said it plainly. You cannot preach public beach access while benefiting from private beaches. The same PNP that restricted access is now opposing a policy to expand it for all Jamaicans. No hypocrisy. Just fairness and access for every Jamaican.

There’s another reality running alongside our economic progress and it is costing us more than we think. As I shared in the Senate, health is not separate from development. It is the foundation of it. With over 75 percent of Jamaicans consuming sugary drinks daily and billions in projected costs from preventable diseases, the message is clear. We cannot build a strong economy on an unhealthy population. The reform of the Special Consumption Tax on sugary drinks is not arbitrary. It is targeted, evidence based and necessary.

When I say men’s health matters, I truly mean it. Too many men are still suffering in silence, facing preventable diseases and receiving diagnoses far too late simply because we do not prioritize regular health checks. That is why I started Men’s Health Matters, a 12-part public education series focused on breaking the silence and encouraging men to take a more active role in their health. When men take care of their health, families are stronger and communities thrive. Your health matters. Your life matters.
