In 2017 a doctor diagnosed me with ALS and told me I would not see this day. Yet this morning I hugged my older daughter and sent her off for her first day of 1st Grade. Not today ALS. Not. Today.

Today I cried. A lot. Some were tears of joy. Others tears of sadness and pain. You have those days when fighting a terminal disease. Those days remind you that despite it all you are still you—feeling, loving, hurting, and, most of all, living. Good night moon.

When I met Merit for the first time she spent 2 hours with me, patiently answering every question. Two years later I am in awe of how she does it all. Here’s to @MeritCudkowicz and the other doctors like her who are changing the world and putting people first. Good night moon.

I hope that when I breathe my last breath, whenever that may be, that someone, somewhere will write that through his fight with ALS he inspired us to dream of what could be and then to take action to make that better, brighter world real for all.

Five years ago I would have sprinted into Lake Michigan. Today, I grab my wife’s hand and we walk side-by-side slowly in. Life has changed. A lot. But one thing remains the same: I’m alive and life is so beautiful.

My oldest daughter was 2 when I was diagnosed with ALS and given six months to live. One of the goals I set then was to be strong enough to hold her hand on the beach when she was 5. She turned 5 this week. And today I held her hand on the beach.
