Beverage cans are having more than a moment.
It seems like almost every new sparkling water, CBD infused tonic, cold brew or alcoholic seltzer is being launched in a can.
But aluminum beverage cans have been hiding a dirty little secret.
Something you might be vaguely aware of but don’t often bring to consciousness.
While a can seems like a more natural option than a plastic bottle, it actually contains an epoxy coating on the inside to protect the can from being corroded by the beverage and the drink from being tainted by the aluminum.
This coating is thicker and stronger than the industry tries to pass it off as. It is more like a liner.
And the liner contains BPA as standard.
Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical that long ago became a dirty word as a potential endocrine distruptor and many products today use “BPA free” as a marketing message.
So it seems kind of staggering that a product many of us consume daily contains BPA as a standard component.
Coca-Cola's own website confirms this.
Yet along with glass, beverage cans seem to enjoy a cleaner reputation than plastic for both recyclability and toxicity. Yet like glass, PET plastic bottles do not contain BPA. Cans do.
Check out the incredible video below that shows this beverage can liner.
