To date, I have identified 38 market gardens in #Pompeii. These include small plots in houses for growing vegetables & herbs, orchards, vineyards, and commercial flower gardens! Here's an example of what they looked like - many have been replanted by @pompeii_sites today. 🍇🥬

Seneca’s description continues: ‘statues split, some people have lost their minds & wander about in their madness’. The relief from the household shrine of Caecilius Iucundus in #Pompeii shows the damage wrought by the earthquake in the Forum: the rocking of the Temple of Jupiter

According to Seneca, the earthquake that shook the Vesuvian area happened today in AD63. In his description he reassures the reader that a flock of 600 sheep that died on Vesuvius didn’t die of fear but of exposure to lethal gases. #Pompeii #earthquake

@CSMFHT Virgil enters the chat: "Others (I can well believe) will hammer out bronze that breathes with more delicacy than us, draw out living features from the marble: plead their causes better, trace with instruments the movement of the skies, and tell the rising of the constellations"
