1/ Nelson Mandela called Walter Sisulu "the first truly political man I ever encountered." Not the most educated. Not the most eloquent. Not the most famous. The first truly political man. Tomorrow is his 114th birthday.

2/ Sisulu arrived in Johannesburg at 16 with nothing. Built a small estate agency on Market Street that became a community institution. Arranged Mandela's legal articles. Introduced him to the ANC. He saw what others would become before they saw it themselves. #TheFutureIsNotAnAccident

3/ He became ANC Secretary-General in 1949. The Programme of Action that year ended 37 years of petitionary politics. He did not write the speeches that made history. He built the organisation that made the speeches possible. #TheFutureIsNotAnAccident

4/ He was arrested at Rivonia in 1963. Sentenced to life imprisonment at 52. He spent 25 years behind bars, 18 of them on Robben Island. Those who shared the island with him describe a man who treated incarceration as a continuation of the work by other means. #TheFutureIsNotAnAccident

5/ His wife, Mama Albertina, did not stop while he was gone. She co-founded and co-led the United Democratic Front in 1983, a federation of more than 600 organisations. She nominated Nelson Mandela as South Africa's first democratically elected president in 1994. Two architects. One family. #TheFutureIsNotAnAccident

Wally Serote - South Africa's National Poet Laureate and a liberation activist - was detained for nine months without charge in 1969. He was 25 years old. Never prosecuted. Emerged and wrote Yakhal'inkomo. He turned 82 on Friday. The state failed. The literature remains. Full article: drmalusigigaba.org/gigaba-serote-… #TheFutureIsNoAnAccident

3/ Not a media channel. Not a campaign site. A library — for essays, speeches, governance analysis, and long-form reflection on the issues that shape where South Africa and Africa go next. drmalusigigaba.org #TheFutureIsNotAnAccident

2/ After more than three decades in public life, I've launched this platform on one conviction: complex questions deserve more than a news cycle. drmalusigigaba.org #TheFutureIsNotAnAccident
