1:04 p.m. — Precipitation increasing in coverage, more snow mixing in this afternoon While precipitation is widespread across the area, it is a bit hit-or-miss when it comes to how heavily it’s falling. There are some signs of increased intensity early this afternoon as low pressure off the North Carolina coast begins to rapidly intensify. Temperatures are mainly in the mid- and upper 30s, chilliest in locations that have either seen heavier precipitation or are higher elevation. Some consistent bands nearer the bay allowed that zone to change to wet, non-accumulating snow, with temperatures falling to about 33 to 35. Snow has been reported across Southern Maryland and in Calvert County over the past hour or so. Accumulating snow is still mainly in elevations above 1,000 feet. More locations should mix with and turn over to wet snow through the next several hours. By about 4 or 5 p.m., most of the area should be transitioned to snow as temperatures fall to the low and mid-30s, then to or just below freezing during the evening. Once the sun is low on the horizon and into evening, travel could get quickly turn dicey as snow intensity around or above 1 inch per hour becomes possible. It’s a good idea to start considering staying home and off the roads this evening. Our next update will be around 3 p.m.

8:40 p.m. — Storm departs but a very cold stretch awaits Other than spotty very light sleet or freezing drizzle the next few hours, this storm is over. Final snow/sleet totals are still coming in. We’ll have a full recap tomorrow. but generally speaking most reports indicate the greater DC area saw: * 3 to 7 inches of snow; 4 to 5 inches most common * 2 to 4 inches of sleet; around 3 inches most common * Light glaze of freezing rain mainly near and east of Interstate-95 * 6 to 9 inches of combined snow and sleet; 6 to 8 inches most common The wintry mess on the ground is going nowhere fast. There’s a reasonable chance highs across the region don’t reach freezing for at least a week. Meanwhile, starting Monday night, lows are probably in the single digits for at least five straight nights and maybe more, even in the District. When was the last time D.C. dropped into the single digits? Christmas Eve 2022. (Photo by Tom Brenner for The Washington Post)

Not exactly sure how I’m supposed to sleep tonight. My #Commanders are going to the playoffs and I cannot wait to see if we are going to LA or back to Tampa for Round 2 or Philly for Round 3

Definitly not firing on all cylinders but I am better than I was on Christmas day in the ER. Today is going to be a long one but my #Commanders have a chance to win 11 games for the 1st time since 1991 and there was no way I was going to miss this game god willing. People may think I am crazy but most people have not dealt with what the true diehards have over the past 24 years. If I am breathing I am going to the game to be with my burgundy and gold brothers and sisters and cheer on our Commanders. See you all at @NWStadium in a couple of hours #RaiseHail

THS WNBA ‘Rookie of the Week’: Angel Reese (Chicago) It was a standout week for the rookie, who was one of just two rookies to record double figures in every game last week. Reese led all rookies in points, rebounds, and steals during the week and had one of the best rookie performances against the top team in the WNBA, recording 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 steals on 8-of-10 shooting. Reese's double-double against the Indiana Fever gave her her sixth consecutive double-double of the season, tying her with Tina Charles and Cindy Brown for the most consecutive double-doubles by a WNBA rookie.
