@keinobjekt interpolation means re-recording an existing song, vs sampling. So the analogy checks out because you produce a new data set from an existing one, within a certain range of fidelity

this isn't what interpolation means in music, and the actual thing is an interpolation method so the mathematical analogy checks out

I realise this is the most pathetically trivial thing you could possibly get annoyed at, but coming from a science background it always bugged me that “interpolation” became the word ppl use to describe a melody or riff borrowed from an older song
