@Conservation_OA Following on from analysis of wildflower seed packets, UCD MSc student Emma Prior has investigated contents of 'bee bombs'. Non-native species still prevalent, but does this negate well-meaning public enagagement @UCDHort @PollinatorPlan

🧐Our results suggest that although seed bombs offer a convenient method of producing mixed-flower habitat patches, consumers should be wary that the number of species they contain can be low, they are likely to contain non-native species.

@EdStrawBio Crop mesh, sticky traps, pheromone traps, mulches etc. All pesticide free plant protection products, but not pesticides?

@yuval_sapir @JeffOllerton We have noticed this effect and one explanation was that WoS started searching using Abstracts (or whole texts) from a certain time. Maybe limit searches to title (and keywords) and see if you get the same jump?

@MusingMollusc Fantastic work by UCD MSc student Claudia Barry who sorted 69000 seeds from 'wildflower' packets bought in Ireland. All brands contained a mix of native and non-native species: great for gardens but maybe not so good for restoration efforts @JaneCStout mdpi.com/2091658

Nice paper from @drmilky1 surveying 'wildflower' seed mixtures in Ireland. Only 25% of seed packets examined originated in Ireland and, of those, less than half the seeds were those of native Irish plant species 😬 mdpi.com/2673-7159/3/1/7

New paper by Neil Mahon (UCD; MWCM) describing how success of timed pollinator counts depends on where, when, and how long you look! Important considerations if comparing pollinators over multiple sites and/or performing long term monitoring. @N_E_Mahon @JaneCStout @ucdagfood

New paper on stem nesting bees and wasps in Irish farms. We only found a few species, but different species use different size tubes. Implications for agri-environment schemes and design of garden 'bee hotels' @JaneCStout @irene_bottero @maher_steph @poshbee_eu

@MusingMollusc Ok so photographing them was far more difficult than I thought. 🤣 I dunno if you can make anything of those pics. Really interesting to see all the wee faces peeking out at night. All dispersed come morning.

@stephenlawlor8 @collieennis pretty much. About 14 cm long, and bamboo was drilled through at different diameters. One end of the pipe then capped with a wooden disc.
