I'm a sports/family med doc, grappling and lifting in decade 6. I show how to get intensely active beyond 40 while staying safe and healthy.

I’ve spent 30 years in healthcare and 4 decades in martial arts, including starting BJJ at age 53. Most people never learned how to maintain their bodies, much less how to keep going hard after age 40. I tore ligaments 3 times before getting serious. Here are 6 rules for getting back to it that everyone needs to know.

If you can get a rain-or-shine habit started, you can do anything. Because that's the anchor. You can chain other habits to it and grow your stack. Over and over, and even start new anchor habits.

My pups have the right idea. Everything gets sharper and better with sufficient sleep. Insight, creativity, follow through, mood. Everything. Just put the phone aside and lights out at 10 tonight. And tomorrow night.

Carl Sagan said we are star stuff. Shaking myself awake after a 2 minute X scroll, I'd say we're iron filings on a slippery parabolic slope with a super magnet at the bottom.

Working for 8 hours is normal. 8 hours straight in front of a computer... will bend your brain and kink your spine. Walking to unbind was the plan. Puppy had other ideas.

As a newly minted BJJ blue belt, I can see why a bunch of folks drop out around now. Nothing seems to be getting any better, despite months of sparring your classmates to a stalemate at best. But that's just it. Everyone is leveling up, including you. Don't you dare walk away.

Most people only dream about getting better. They know what needs doing, but life keeps getting in the way. Whether it's flossing your teeth, doing your morning walk, or hitting the gym, do a thing regularly and you're already ahead of 98% of the room.

Very nearly the best thing you can do for your mind, energy, and creativity is a full night of sleep; vigorous exercise like intervals is a close second. But don't take my word for it. Whatever healthy thing you do that makes you feel Now We're Talking? Make that your habit.

Got up yesterday 2 hours earlier than normal (hot weather), heck, made coffee, let the pups out, got in 2 mini workouts. Ended the day with energy to spare. Today, rolled out of bed and straight to work. That's not a step backward. More of the former, definitely.

Don't be a legend in your own mind. If I had it to do all over again, I'd focus on making consistency an easy habit. Instead of trying to cultivate flashes of brilliance. Applies to everything, but goes double for health and fitness.

If you're an empath, you've got to grow a thick skin early, or to shrug stuff off at a moment's notice. Everyone is fighting their own battles, and few fighters are joyous. You've got to carry your own peace wherever you go.

The journey of a thousand steps starts with a piece of string. Floss your teeth — floss ONE tooth. Every night, if you're not already, It's over quicker than the time it takes going thru all the reasons why not (tired, etc). "No matter what" starts here.

Aristotle was right, and Aristotle was wrong. Show some people a better way, called education, and they take it. Show others, they say they know what to do, but they aren't interested. Still others don't know, are grateful to learn, can't act but are willing to try. Which are you?

7) The long game demands a long buildup. The ramp up to serious training takes months, not days or weeks. With the right training and pacing, I'm now able to train BJJ 4 times a week in Decade 6. You can, too, if you're smart about it.
