Beyond SOS - the "Shiny Object Syndrome": The most effective #schoolsafety work is often the least visible. After tragedies, pressure pushes #schoolleaders toward highly visible #schoolsecurity measures. But real prevention happens through trained staff, #threatassessment, relationships, and early intervention. The goal isn’t the appearance of safety (#securitytheater). It’s prevention. More in my new school blog: zurl.co/jxC6c

During our #schoolsecurity & emergency preparedness assessment consultations, here’s what #schoolleaders consistently tell us they need: 🔹 More staff to strengthen student supervision 🔹 Training for teachers & support staff on active supervision 🔹 Expanded social, emotional & mental health supports for students 🔹 Practical strategies to address increasing aggressive behavior — including in younger children 🔹 Stronger parent involvement & support 🔹 No big, shiny AI tech objects — for starters, basic security tools that work: ▪ Cameras that actually function and cover the right areas ▪ Reliable two-way radios and PA systems ▪ Access control fobs & readers where they’re truly needed The message is clear: #Schoolsafety isn’t about hype. It’s about people, behavior, supervision, support, and practical tools that work.
