R. F. Kuang is an anti-Zionist author who supports BDS and won’t let her books be published in Israel. In her upcoming book, there is a 2 page scene with an Israeli pianist. The online book world had turned against her and are cancelling all pre-orders. This is where we’re at in the literary world.

i don't trust people who don't like cats and i'm not even joking. people who have so much hatred for cats are always genuinely evil hearted people

i feel like some "woke progressive" people have a morality based around blind revenge to injustice, rather than a morality based around uplifting those affected by it and then deconstructing the system that allowed that injustice.

Chronically online performative brain rot take. The author who wrote Babel and has actively been loudly supporting pro Palestine, while also donating to multiple Palestine relief orgs and using her platform to constantly denounce genocide isn’t going to be cancelled because of mentioning someone in a book being from Israel.. that is not the same thing as writing a pro Zionist novel or character - and if you are truly this dense, you are insane.

RF kuang had 190+ countries to choose from to write about a character’s nationality and she still chose to write about the one who's actively committing gen0cide against Palestinians for years😍

@iraqidna @LycanFerret @milkstrology great, tell that to east Europeans and see if they agree. double standards and hypocrisy here at its finest. if you're condemning even the mention of Israel in media then also condemn mentioning Russia. otherwise you're just a hypocrite

i think it’s odd how people treat reading as a hobby like it’s a fandom wdym ur gonna stop reading all together bc an author did something problematic. like pick up a different book.

The thought of quitting reading because one author did something problematic is so weird to me because why are we stanning authors?? Authors are not celebrities the books that they make are supposed to be attached to not the authors themselves.

Learn to separate art from the artist, because if you don’t you will ALWAYS find out something about every author/artist you don’t like/disagree with. Every product you buy, every store you shop from, everything you read, it will all in one way or another contribute or be created by someone you don’t like. You literally cannot function normally in society thinking this way. Morals are good to have, but if you make them too strict you won’t be able to enjoy anything. It doesn’t make you a bad person to enjoy any of these things. If you like something, like it. Don’t care about what others think or how you’re perceived, it doesn’t matter. If you don’t you’ll become an insufferable person nobody wants to be around, always judging and shaming others for their interests while trying to virtue signal to everyone that you’re one of the “good ones”. It’s a very binary, black and white, shallow morality system that simply doesn’t work and it waters humans down from complex nuanced individuals to “the good guys that like the good things” and “the bad guys that like the bad things.”

honestly i'm this close to quitting reading for good. every single author i actually love turns out to be problematic or worse. i'm so tired of finding out after i already got attached. feels like i can't enjoy anything anymore without a background check first

Parasocialism is definitely a major factor thats killing art. The idea that authors & artists have to be morally pure & create art thats safe & consumable (EXCEPTION TO EVERY RULE dont try me) Maybe Nietzsche was right after all 😭 Y’all just want liberal slop.

moral purity obsession locking a whole generation out of literacy due to the fact that the greatest writers are usually maladjusted weirdos who trend towards extreme personalities / politics if you want something other than slop you will have to deal with “problematic” writers

This is a terrible way to approach reading. But also: viewing everyone you encounter as problematic, and therefore beyond the scope of redemption, will leave you miserable and frustrated. As human beings, we are all prone to error; therefore we must extend mercy to one another.

this. and also what i find interesting is that the same people will then go read russian literature or media that have russian characters shown in positive light and have no problem with it but a 2 page sequence about an israeli pianist is too much. double standards?
Kat Rosenfield@katrosenfield

People don’t really read fiction anymore and that is a problem; another problem, however, is that among the dwindling population of people who do read, there is a sizeable contingent who seem not to understand what books are for
