@MonkipiQuinn That frustration led to a design philosophy that values the emergent over the prescriptive, & the term that got associated with prescription was "story".
Interestingly! I think that what we used to describe as "story" was replaced with "plot", as in: "We derailed the DMs plot."

@MonkipiQuinn WoD was a prime example of this, with a series of fictional constructs, some of which were literal prewritten stories, that promised a game experience that was incompatible with the game's mechanics.

@FedericoS15190 The frustrating part is that there's 2 good ideas in there married in the most awkward, clunky kludge way
"Sometimes things go unexpectedly weird for no forewarned reason" and "you get XP when things go wrong, not smoothly" are both good things for a game to communicate! But.

@JazzElves The last bit, of "player cannot refuse if they have no XP" is open season for GMs to justify being assholes. Moreso considering that XP seems to be directly tied to achievements (or GM intrusions), there is no "casual" way to earn it (no "XP for finishing a session" kinda thing).
