I truly don’t understand why people aren’t also equally appalled at Benson’s slewfoot.
Yes, the stick slash is way more dangerous and far more violent and cannot happen. He will be suspended likely for 3-5 games.
Benson slew-footed him up 4-1 in the final 2 minutes of a series-ending win, on a clear icing after Benson lost the race.
McAvoy is 100% wrong for the slash, put blatantly ignoring context seems foolish to me.

@ByMHarrington Mike it’s a trip. Not a slew. No intent to pull him back with the stick or hand and he didn’t kick at the skates . 2 min penalty blown out of proportion. Even McAvoys trip in Tage in game 2 was a simple trip.

Mike, if it was a simple trip, McAvoy would have fallen forward, not backwards. It was a slew foot and, what was worse, it happened a dangerous distance from the boards. Those do draw suspensions.

@conroyherald Steve. Have you read the definition of a slew? It was a bad trip but not a slew. there was no push or pull of the upper body backwards with his hand or stick. Everyone likes to use the slew for a trip from behind. It’s no different than getting his stick in there for a trip

Slew is a kick or hard tap on the skates while pulling back on the body with your hand or stick. 2nd part never happened. It’s a shitty trip at the end of a game that was already over. @Goosey1994 Did you have the same reaction to McAvoys non call “trip” on Thompson in game 1 that sent him to the locker room. That too overacted to be a slew. Benson can be cheap but man McAvoy had quite the series hiding behind that bad jaw and taking some shots at guys

Yes, you dont do that, but to think Benson was innocent and didnt put that upon himself is untrue. You cant corkscrew someone in a game that was over, that close to the boards at that speed and not expect a response.
Both should be disciplined.

It’s a hard call. Obviously you can’t be swinging your stick like that but what Benson did could have resulted in a catastrophic injury. The league is a lot more forgiving in the playoffs. If Benson doesn’t get games — doubt he will — McAvoy shouldn’t.

@conroyherald No excuse though for McAvoy’s reaction. He’s got a reputation for dirty plays and has been suspended twice in his career. I’m guessing he gets suspended a minimum of 5 games to start next season.

The problem is the slew-foot is arguably just as bad and I don’t think DoPS is going to suspend Benson.
So McAvoy will get a game or two.
