Seventy miles south in Fayette County, a Blackstone-owned data center secretly consumed 29 million gallons through two water connections the county didn't know existed. 44 Olympic swimming pools' worth. Residents complained about low pressure. The county told them to stop watering their lawns. When investigators finally traced the problem, the county billed the developer $147,000 and imposed zero fines. Georgia is in severe to exceptional drought right now. The power constraint gets all the attention in AI infrastructure. You can't run GPUs without megawatts. But you also can't cool them without water. And unlike power, water has no national grid. Every gallon comes from local aquifers and municipal systems sized for residential neighborhoods. Build fast, draw water, let the county figure it out after the wells go dry.

There is something deeply impressive about how India handles logistics at scale. I recently renewed my Indian passport and along with it my German residence permit which is tied to my passport. It took me 30 days to get an appointment at the Indian Embassy. Once I got the appointment and submitted my documents in Berlin it took around 6 weeks to get back a new passport This involved coordinating with the passport office in Kolkata and the local police- the police had to physically verify the address of my permanent residence in Kolkata. Also, passports are not printed at the Embassy. They are printed in India and then flown to embassies around the world. This entire international affair with cross border movement of physical documents was done in 6 weeks. In contrast, it took me 6 weeks to just get an appointment at the Foreigner’s office (Ausländerbehorde) in Berlin. And just the printing of the new card will take around 8 weeks, all of which will be done within the city. I know a lot of stuff doesn’t work, but sometimes I cannot help but be amazed at how vast and sprawling our democracy, both literally and metaphorically, is and it is somehow still not falling apart.

So are you saying @aravind that when Trump lavishes praise on PM Modi it also means nothing? Because a great deal is made of it. The very fact that Trump has met Xi before he has attended QUAD is an indication of his priorities. Can we be blind to the fact that Trump never followed up on his threats to sanction China in the manner he did India? Can we ignore that Trump has taken a plane load of CEOs to Beijing in an attempt to signal that America isn't actively decoupling from China?
