How can we account for inequality when measuring economic mobility❓
Many mobility measures focus on rank changes across generations or time.
But ranks only capture relative positions regardless of income/wealth differences.

John Leahy, the chair of Michigan’s economics department, has suddenly passed away. I deeply mourn his loss. He was exceptionally smart and humorous, but most importantly, he had deep empathy. It is so difficult to process what happened. May he rest in peace.

I am deeply saddened that my colleague and coauthor, John Leahy, has passed away. The sharpest economic intuition ever. Dang. But the trait he had since at least second grade (we went to second grade together) that I will remember the most was unending energy and enthusiasm.
