Another conference, another Volo-Trip 🚆We’ve arrived in #Berlin for the @republica. This year’s focus is ”Who cares?" and the people we met so far definitely do care a lot. It’s hard to choose which sessions to attend to, but we’ll share some highlights here in the next days 💡

This week in DC I got to work with DW trainee @SostAnnika on her first video on the US election. Mentorship and developing talent is so much of what we're about at @DeutscheWelle - it’s been a privilege being at both sides of it. Applications for Annika's program @dw_akademie are still open. The new #WorldsOfJournalism study shows that in Germany, young professionals are scared away and editorial autonomy is decreasing. ”Journalism is not a reflection of society, but there are tendencies towards more diversity.” @WLoosen & Anna von Garmissen @republica.

From listening to how GenZ journalists are working in the media space, to understanding how we can decolonise media development and understanding what it really means to draw the line between journalism and activism, it has been an interesting time at #ijf24 in Perugia. @dw_volos

In the first months of Russia‘s full-scale invasion, Ukrainian newsrooms were operating in survival mode. But soon, holding authorities accountable and investigating corruption was back. And so was the pressure on journalists by the government.

Most tech journalism is Western-led, but many more people live outside “the West“. @ContextNewsroom @iamtomiwa @AnupKaphle @khanundrum @JaswalSrishti say tech journalism should go beyond a beat and focus on how people’s lives are impacted. Local perspectives are often missing.

There is a sense that podcasts have reached their peak. But @MukulDevichand @nytimes says that human attention to podcasts continues to grow and audio apps can be successful. Audio enables a special kind of connection and intimacy to the listeners. Quality and curation are key.

“We need to do a better job at conveying multiple shades of gray.“ How often do you seek voices of peace in your reporting? Do you cover a third narrative amidst polarisation? Do you cover women as victims or survivors only or also as leaders and in “unusual“ roles?

Fusing journalism with art to counter news avoidance? That‘s what projects such as Live Magazine (🇫🇷), Spartacus (🇵🇱) or @inker_world (🇺🇦) are doing: bringing journalism on stage, mixing it with graphic fiction, art expos, lectures, dance and stand-up to attract new audiences.
