Journalism was a place to learn & have ideas challenged. Not now, Dylan was right: “Something is happening, but you don’t know what it is, Do you, Mr Jones?”

@heatherewart1 Hope you will call into Coober Pedy. Top spot where there are no street names & everyone collects their mail from the post office where it sits in a big box in the corner. The SA government sent into an old mate to try & put some order into the place but he hoisted the white flag

The start of a very special girls’ road trip with my old friends Maria Lockyer and Sandi Leach. At trendy cafe in Quorn on our way to the #Oodnadatta track and #LakeEyre in outback SA

I must have missed this but I hear a retired US Army General, Ben Hodges, referred recently to Trump’s Cabinet as a team of “butt-snorkelers”. Nicely put, sir.

Words replete with meaning, spoken with real intent: “It’s 106 miles to Chicago. We got a full tank of gas half a pack of cigarettes. It’s dark and we’re wearing sunglasses.”

@KosSamaras Clear political malpractice at work here. If you can’t run a chook raffle stay away from the chook house.

Another round of Victorian Liberal leadership speculation minus any genuine admission they have a deep structural crisis confronting them. The federal Liberal Party review acknowledges this problem and they are attempting to find solutions to it - but in Victoria, no change. Let’s break down this week’s Resolve poll some more. Combined, only 25% of Victorians under 54 support the Coalition. Their statewide total (33%) is inflated almost entirely by older voters. Metro Melbourne Metro under-54s: Coalition 20–22% Inner Melbourne: collapsing to 15–17% among under-54s (Greens + Labor dominate, independents nibble). Outer Melbourne: slightly stronger at 22–25%, but still weak compared to Labor and minors. Melbourne is where generational change and cultural diversity cut deepest. Nearly 70% of residents will have a parent born overseas or speak another language at home by 2030, making the Coalition’s “under-54 problem” even sharper. But it’s not entirely good news for the Coalition out of Melbourne either. Regional Capitals: Bendigo, Ballarat, Geelong These cities look less like the bush, more like Melbourne’s outer suburbs, younger, more diverse, more professionalised. Coalition vote under 54s. Geelong 20–22% Ballarat (Eureka + Wendouree) 22–24% Bendigo (East + West) 23–25% Regional & Rural Victoria Rest of regional/rural Victoria (outside the big cities): Coalition’s under-54 vote is 32–35%, much stronger than metro and regional cities, thanks to agricultural towns, conservative demographics and lower migrant share. This is the only demographic zone propping up the Coalition’s under-54 numbers.

@heatherewart1 Would’ve been a night & seven eighths - happy day to the Great Russell Barton, a top shelf journo & wrangler of some of the biggest names of the modern (& not quite so modern) era. Wish I could’ve been there.

Not even a week to go before the best line up of local blues music seen in many years. A down-to-the-wire, one-act-standing, contest at @Lefty’s Music Hall in Caxton Street, Paddington, this Sunday afternoon, August 24, doors open at midday, tickets at OzTix or at the door.

@plalor 2/2: He personally tortured & murdered prisoners, primarily members of the French Resistance & Jewish people. He was responsible for the deaths of an estimated 4,000 people and the deportation of around 7,500 Jews, most of whom perished in Auschwitz.

@plalor This is as bad as anything we’ve seen & heard in Lyon, learning about the terror brought to this city by Klaus Barbie & his SS thugs in 1943-44. Barbie, known as the "Butcher of Lyon," was head of the Gestapo & responsible for torture, murder, & deportation 1/2
