🚨 It looks like the UK government is gearing up to upend copyright law in favour of AI companies, legalising the theft of their work. This is despite creatives' huge protests, and despite previous proposals being roundly rejected by the public. There are rumours it is considering introducing a 'commercial research exception' for AI training. This would be disastrous. It would mean handing the life's work of British creatives to AI companies for free, to train their models on. In the House of Lords today, a government minister refused to rule this out. To be clear, this would amount to legalising theft. It would fly in the face of public opinion on what is fair, and would mean a surrender of British creatives' work by this Labour government. It would mean the lobbying by big US tech firms had succeeded, and the protests of the UK's creatives had been ignored. People's work is not the government's to give away. If you're in the UK and you care about creatives and the creative industries, please write to your MP!

@Oddernod Totally agree. Worse, their one remaining flagship, After Effects, is getting criminally little attention while they focus on beginner GenAI gimmicks.

In a lot of ways, this wasn't just the MAX that AI took over. Or the year that Adobe conceded to the faster moving, VC-funded, capital raising, seas boiling upstarts. When you see something like Project Graph it feels like, for better or worse, the culmination of what the whole Creative Cloud as a concept was sold to us as being from the start. • A subscription where updates come at a clip faster than most can absorb • An ecosystem of inter-related tools that talk back and forth to one another through a central hub (Firefly) • a unified UX where ideas are more important than the actual final execution (albeit no one expected that UI to essentially be a one-way AOL Instant Messenger!) • speed of ideation over grueling but accurate iteration This is where Adobe stands today: an expensive collection of disparate tools tied together by a sliding scale of ethically, legally, and morally dubious flavors of genAI that indexes heavily on beginners, vibes and concepting that's good enough for right now, over the tedious and prescriptive tools of yesterday. On to 2026 – what a time to be alive!

Other than After Effects, every Adobe tool has a decent alternative. Yet, Adobe is dedicating almost no attention to the one remaining flagship tool "the core of motion graphics". Incredibly frustrating.

Seriously, though! How many of the gimmicky tools Adobe has pushed out in the last 5-6 years are actually used by the people obligated to use the Creative Cloud for professional work?
