Europe must do three things: -10% tariff on all American imports going up to 25% if the American tariffs stay in place; -break up the Internet monopolies and halting the transfer of our data to the other side of the Atlantic; -most urgently establish a European Defense Union including army.

That Hungary, Czech & Slovakia are the ones not to support Ukraine is at odds with their experience of Soviet domination-1956 & 1968.

Use of enhanced cooperation for Ukraine funding was a last resort to overcome opposition from Hungary, Slovakia & Czech. They could not prevent a decision, just remove themselves from the loans. A short term win but longer term they are identified as 3 awkward countries

@jimfitzpatrick @fiannafail Can you point to any document anywhere (white paper, policy paper, legislation, Departmental publication, whatever) that says Ireland is neutral? Really, I encourage you to try, and maybe learn something in the effort.

Not to be contrarian but it might not be the worst thing that this plan fell through. Those funds will never be returned to Russia, and now instead they can be used to finance Ukraine's reconstruction. kyivpost.com/post/66534

Bizarre how so many parliamentarians could attach their names to such a flawed document. How many of them believe Article 29 of Bunreacht na hÉireann commits Ireland to neutrality? Have they read the constitution? Have their aides? Amateurish. irishstatutebook.ie/eli/cons/en/ht…

@Farrell_Mairead Adequate defence funding will prevent a large scale war in Europe (or an escalation of the current one) - precisely what the EU is supposed to do. Finance committee here relies on half truths and ignorance to push a juvenile argument.

Joint Committee on Finance etc. releases a report that is not completely detached from reality, but almost. There are outright falsehoods in this document, and the general thread of resisting "EU militarism" is incredibly naive given the realities. data.oireachtas.ie/ie/oireachtas/…

The Finance Committee launched our report looking at the SAFE Programme & ReArm Europe. The Committee opposes the use of the EU general budget under the SAFE Regulation & is concerned that may be in conflict with Ireland's military neutrality. Read here data.oireachtas.ie/ie/oireachtas/…

@Farrell_Mairead Point 11 - How do we make sure money doesn't go towards IDF? Reasonable enough. Remember though that a max of 35% can be spent on non-EU companies, and only for essential components. No-one will force Ireland to buy Israeli weapons...

@Farrell_Mairead Point 8 on cluster munitions. That's actually fair, especially since some EU members have indicated their desire to ignore certain treaty obligations. Ireland could look for guarantees from EUMS that SAFE funds should not go toward cluster munitions.

@Farrell_Mairead Point 7 - most egregious, you simply must correct the record here because this is a lie. Article 29 does not "affirm Ireland's military neutrality". The commitment to pacific settlement of disputes does not equal neutrality. Please read it: irishstatutebook.ie/eli/cons/en/ht…

@Farrell_Mairead Point 5: Gee, I wonder what has caused this shift in priorities? The Union is continuing with its remit as a peace project by attempting to prevent war in Europe. Also, typo: *Union's (sic). Who is editing this document?

@Farrell_Mairead Point 4 - selective suspension of rules. Fair. Have you noticed though that there is a war in Europe?

@Farrell_Mairead Opinions of the Committee: Points 1-3 what about the Climate? If defending Europe increases our CO2 emissions should we not bother? Sorry that we don't have battery powered tanks.

I absolutely love the argument that this is somehow due to European warmongering. When the Cold War was over, Europeans couldn't wait to destroy their militaries and if it weren't for Russian aggression, the entire EU put together would probably make like 7 tanks a year
