Followup post on @NHM_Tring - this lemur who I am convinced possesses magical powers, and on a more serious note: an emperor penguin thought to be a type specimen!

A visit to @NHM_Tring to experience Walter Rothschild's fine collection and then some!

@AlanaMcPake @HistorPerspect In some cases yes, especially large game, & even domestically certain classes couldn't hunt what gentlemen could, but there are so many examples of collections amassed b/c of an appreciation for science and nature, not 'thrill of the hunt' which is what visitors don't always know

@eCREOpatra @HistorPerspect that's surprising to me - scrolling through, I found the tiger the most upsetting! was having these kind of collections a way to perform class/show 'proper' good taste for the owners of big estates?

That was a fascinating presentation I have definitely picked up some interior design tips! Now Emily will be responding to any questions. Please can you comment on their thread, or on this Tweet! @eCREOpatra #HistPer2023

@HistorPerspect #HistPer2023 15/15 Precisely because visitors may balk at taxidermy is why collections in situ present a powerful opportunity: these silent inhabitants are an affront to modern perception, thus able to impart country house history & deepen our understanding of the past. Thanks!

@AlanaMcPake @HistorPerspect What's interesting to me is that rather than the tiger rugs or other endangered species, in my site visits I've overhead most comments about head mounts, so I think form has an impact

@HistorPerspect @eCREOpatra thanks for sharing, Emily! the idea of visitor reactions to taxidermy is so interesting: are there particular animals or examples that tend to provoke stronger reactions?

@SamB24 @HistorPerspect I think that we've had a century of understanding our impact on our world, so visitor response is inherently negative- getting the historical context eases the distaste

@HistorPerspect #HistPer2023 14/15 Fresh means of expressing the function of these collections as scientific objects, beloved memories & decor help to shift perspective. #PowderhamCastle’s 2021 ‘Fabulous Beasts’ exhibit jointly celebrated both taxidermy of the estate & contemporary art pieces
