@ArblasterLogan Why do I keep seeing this? If Ben Cherington traded Seth Hernandez for a relief pitcher, he’d be a national laughingstock. (More of one than he already is, I mean.) They can get the kind of relief help that they need by parting with far less than the likes of Hernandez.

1. Nobody knows if the MLB is going to have a work stoppage/condensed season next year or not
2. Paul Skenes is under club control until 2029 and Jones until 2029. Yes, Ashcraft is under control until 2031. So is Valdez.
3. O’Hearn only has one more year. This is Lowe’s only year.
The Pirates have arguably the best offense in the NL THIS SEASON, one of the best starting pitching trios in baseball, and have a legitimate chance to play deep into October if they straighten out the bullpen.
So, are people really this fixated on keeping Seth Hernandez for the future, so he can overlap with only some of this talent for about a year?
Obviously, the Pirates can and will try to extend some of the names listed above, but it’s not a guarantee.
The guarantee is that they have a chance to WIN NOW. The window is here. In the present…
And they should approach the deadline that way.

This is a GREAT question. Obviously how Cruz performs when he returns would be the decisive factor. And you can extend this question down the lineup. Do you play percentages or all of a sudden throw them out because “playoffs?”

If the ONLY WAY the Padres will trade Mason Miller to the Pirates is if the Pirates give up Seth Hernandez, then the Pirates should consider it. Jared Jones looks to be back to form. 23 Ks to 3 walks and only 2 ER in his last 3 starts. Braxton Ashcraft is Braxton Ashcraft. Paul Skenes is Paul Skenes. It would be phenomenal to add Seth Hernandez to that group, but you eventually won’t be able to keep all of them anyway. The Pirates also will not be trading Skenes as long as they are contending. I would consider Seth Hernandez being a part of a Mason Miller trade. Keep in mind, I do think Seth Hernandez will end up being a good starter in the league, but he hasn’t necessarily been lights out since he got promoted to A+ Greensboro. 3.56 ERA across 11 starts.
