@SalvadorDafti @wizwaz63 They were a great band…I guess they’re still at it. I have a lot of admiration for Keith Richards in particular.

@e_f_bartlam @wizwaz63 Lucky you’re not Jamaican too then, or from Noo Yawk. You’d be spitting feathers at his accent there. Luckily it’s not a big deal and their music is so good. A staggering amount of American bands mimic them, and the Beatles, too. Yet never match them. Go figure

The Rolling Stones - Dead Flowers A hick-lipped kiss-off, with tongue firmly in cheek, that blends good ol’ boy revelry, Jagger detachment and smack. Simply devilish, devilishly simple. Classic Stones. The Marquee Club. 1971.

It wasn’t a full throated sing-a-long or anything…but you could hear the melody being hummed and mumbled from every direction.

I’m in Memphis tonight. I ate at Corky’s, not because I’m choosing favorites but, because it was across the street. The bar maid, who was lovely, sang along to every song; however, when Elvis came on…the whole restaurant sang along. Return to Sender! It was as awesome 😝

@wizwaz63 @SalvadorDafti The intent is not the problem. David Allan Coe is at his very best when he’s having a go. As a Brit, you may not be aware of how often we are bombarded with fake Southern accents in U.S. media. It can be offensive but not in this case. Just cringy.

@SalvadorDafti It’s not offensive or anything. It’s just hard to listen to. There’s videos of high school rawk bands in The States doing A Certain Romance…in full accent! It’s enough to make you want to cut off your own electricity. Please stop. 🤣

@e_f_bartlam Vocally, Jagger was about 10 different people. As much an actor as a singer. An entirely Mick Jagger way of singing. That’s why numerous imitators never match it. He loves country music, he just feels awkward singing it, so he hams/‘hicks’ it up. He’s known for it

@SalvadorDafti I’ve never really known what Jagger’s voice was supposed to be. Jack Hamilton in Just Around Midnight has a great passage about Not Fade Away..how, because it was Buddy Holly and not Diddley, Jagger was free to get into the song without fears of being accused of minstrelsy.

@SalvadorDafti I didn’t realize all those country rock songs were meant to be gently mocking. Still, as a Southerner, it takes me out of the song…it’s a tough listen.

@jillannolson Definitely a vibe and like nothing else going on at the time. They get almost no credit for the fact that did most of the producing and arranging of their songs. What actually went down between them and Rose is as clear as mud…beyond the vague it was Temptation

@e_f_bartlam Don’s pseudonym of Adrian Kimberly and his arrangement of this classic song seem like an inspiration for the Austin Powers vibe:)

Is it possible that this song, and not Temptation, that was the final straw for Wesley Rose? It peaked at #34 in July 61. Rose filed suit the next month. youtu.be/26nB47NTbHs?si…
