I continue to follow the situation in the Middle East with dismay. Like other regions of the world, it is torn apart by war and violence. We cannot remain silent in the face of the suffering of so many defenseless victims of these conflicts. What wounds them wounds all of humanity. The death and pain caused by these wars is a scandal for the entire human family and a cry that rises to God!

Peace Through Strength, to put it mildly’??? Spare us the Orwellian propaganda. This is what happens when a malignant narcissist with the impulse control of a toddler gets his hands on the world’s most powerful military. Trump isn’t projecting strength — he’s exposing his own profound insecurity, strategic incompetence, and pathological need to play warlord. What we have here is not peace. It’s the dangerous flailing of a deeply unstable man who remains wholly unfit for the office he holds. Disgraceful. And terrifying.

When some loons online celebrated and mocked the murder of Charlie Kirk, there was a huge outrage on the right, and rightfully so. Some people even lost their jobs over it. Today, the President of the United States took to social media to celebrate the death of a decorated Vietnam veteran and former FBI director, a Republican, and we all know virtually every Republican member of Congress will refuse to condemn it This is where we are now.

More than 2,500 Camp Pendleton Marines just departed for the Middle East. They follow another 2,500 who left just days earlier from Okinawa. Five thousand of the most capable, disciplined, and professional fighting men and women on earth, heading toward a war that started with no authorization from Congress and no coherent explanation to the American people. That should concern every American, regardless of party. Congress has not been fully briefed. There has been no debate or vote. No strategy presented to the representatives of the people whose children are being sent into harm’s way. The Constitution does not give any president the unilateral authority to take this country to war, and the silence from so many of my colleagues is not acceptable. I fear this is how forever wars begin. With a deployment, then another, then another, until we are too deep to ask how we got there. Our service members deserve better. What is the mission? What does success look like? How do we bring them home? These are not partisan questions.
