Not to disrupt the US-Japan love-in, which is quite charming, but there was once a time when the UK and Japan had a kind of special relationship of their own — and the US pretty much forced an end to it. The UK embassy is to this day prominently situated near the Imperial Palace, with the relationship dating way back to the British influence on the Meiji restoration, and first formalised in the Treaty of Amity in 1858. This developed into a full-on Anglo-Japanese Alliance in 1902. The partnership was notable because it broke with Britain's more general policy of splendid isolation. The US essentially pressured the UK into ending this relationship as part of the Washington Naval Treaty, nominally to secure arms limitations but really to disempower its rivals in the Pacific. This was understandable from a US perspective. The British Empire was for a long time a strategic rival and a potentially significant threat, though the UK pointlessly impoverishing itself in WW1 made the end of its Great Power status pretty much inevitable. There is, if I recall correctly, an alt history timeline in The Man in the High Castle in which the British Empire fights and defeats the US. Prior to WW1 this was not a trivial concern. But it is ironic that, in ending an alliance to secure the Pacific, the US eventually entered WW2 because it was attacked, from the Pacific, by half of the alliance it severed. (I am aware that a British person saying this in 2026 is like the fat ugly chick nobody likes trying to sidle in at a party - "remember how we never nuked you?" - but history is interesting.)
