STW13 A quote from this chapter reminded me of some of topics we covered in 301/2 that a great check for understanding is having students explain the content to each other. I had isolated this idea to math, but it can easily be used in the world of literacy. #331 @ktkelly14

CTW10 I had always considered time lines to be a graphic found in S. Studies textbooks, so using a timeline in literacy was a foreign concept to me. I love the cross-curriculum usage of the timeline to serve as a base of information to build sequential text from. #331 @ktkelly14

CTW6 Still thinking about the concept of ending students home to find new vocab. This approach lets students explore in their environment, lets them learn about the vocab of their life, and allows them to bring a part of their life into the classroom. @ktkelly14 #331

A4: I am concerned that I do not read enough in my own personal life to be a good literary role model for my students. How do you all keep up with your own reading goals despite the crazy and unpredictable school days? #preservicelit

For this month (and my life) I am trying to write more poetry each day. For the end of my time in the classroom this semester I will share a poem I wrote about all the students in my class as a goodbye present. #preservicelit

A2: Regardless of what is happening in the classroom or the school, reading and writing have to be present every single day. Literacy cannot take a backseat to anything, and especially not testing. #preservicelit

A1: The easiest way to engage my students with literacy is to find texts that both interest them and relate to them. Students are better engaged when texts either reflect an interest of theirs or reflect their own experiences. #preservicelit @ktkelly14

A4: We have to instill our students with a true love of writing and how writing is the doorway to self-expression and communication with others around us. #preservicelit #EDU331

A3: You're Here for a Reason by Nancy Tillman, Love by Matt de la Pena, and The Big Umbrella by Amy and Juniper Bates are my current favorites! #preservicelit #EDU331

I am trying to discover books that feature diverse family structures while the focus of the book is not completely on that family system in order to "normalize" these different families. Suggestions are welcomed and treasured! #preservicelit

A2: I am already working to establish a rich classroom library by sifting through thrift stores and clearance sections... but also through being picky about what my students are exposed to (love, acceptance, representation) #preservicelit #EDU331

I love that you mention "coming to the carpet" since I also see the carpet as an equal space to connect with your class and inspire your students with your own love of reading!

A1: To privilege read alouds every day, I hope to create a classroom that looks forward to coming to the carpet and enjoying a book together. We need to make sure time is put aside every day to read a good book with our students! #preservicelit #EDU331
