My beloved wife Jenny fell asleep in God yesterday as I held her hand. I have loved her with my whole heart for 20 years. Wife, Mother, Friend. The most kind, illumined, graceful person I have ever met. As sweet behind closed doors as she was everywhere else. Vivacious, curious, intelligent, beautiful, and full to overflowing with light and love. She has taught us that the glory of God is a person fully alive, awake, and joyful. She fought cancer bravely and beautifully for almost 13 years, and now may she rest in peace with her Lord Jesus.

Want to give your child a leg up in kindergarten? Expose them to a million extra words. It’s easier than it sounds. I wrote recently about the vocabulary building power of reading aloud to your child. Books expose children to new worlds through their storytelling - and with those new worlds come new WORDS. Words that you may not have had occasion to use otherwise. Reading develops this vocabulary quality in part through vocabulary quantity. A recent study from Ohio State University suggests that children who are read five books a day from infancy will be exposed to 1.4 million more words by kindergarten than those who lack this advantage. If five books seems like a lot, rest assured that there’s advantage to any reading at all. Children read a single book a day will benefit to the tune of 290,000 more words. A rich vocabulary lends itself to explosive reading growth when the time comes. That’s because you can’t truly decode words you don’t know. So read, read, read with your little one. You’ll be amazed by the return on investment. This adorable little book worm was shared to IG by pitterpatterpals_.

What you see in this video is more than a toddler picking out a bag of chips. It’s one of the earliest forms of literacy. “Environmental print” is a fancy name for the written language that surrounds children each day: familiar logos, labels, street signs, etc. Among its ranks are typically the first symbols children come to recognize and associate with meaning. Well before they can read conventionally, toddlers often recognize McDonalds’ ubiquitous golden arches, for example, and associate them with french fries. Now watch as this little guy manages to use his knowledge of packaging, logos, and pictures to rummage through this box - carefully considering and setting aside the bags that do not match his desired choice, until he identifies the cheese puffs he is searching for. He may not yet be interacting with text in the more sophisticated ways he will in time, but make no mistake: this little guy is an early reader. A privilege to see his developing 🧠 in action. 🎥 credit unknown
