「日本のリンゴは甘すぎるよね( Japanese apple is too sweet. )」 数年前にアメリカへ視察に行った際、酒場のマスターに言われたことを今でも覚えている。 日本では「甘いリンゴこそ正義」みたいな風潮があるけど、そもそもリンゴを日本のように”デザート”として食べるのではなくランチとして、スナックとして食べる文化圏の中では「美味しさ」の定義が違うんだよなと初めて気づいたのだ。 日本では「甘酸っぱい」部類に入るピンクレディー®なんかもアメリカのスーパーでは「sweet apple」というカテゴリで販売されていたのも驚きだった。 「日本のリンゴは世界一美味しい」という声も日本国内ではある中で、僕は日本、アメリカ、中国、NZ、オーストラリアのリンゴをそれぞれ食べてみて結果として「日本のリンゴがやはり一番美味い」という感想を持った。でもそれはあくまで「僕自身の好みの話」。 諸説あるが、世界には16,000～24,000品種のリンゴが存在すると言われている。それぞれの国の文化圏、文脈での「リンゴの美味しさ」というのがきっとあって、それがそのままこの果物の持つ面白さでもあるんだろうなと思う。 個人的にいつか食ってみたいのはカザフスタンのリンゴだ。世界中に散らばったリンゴの原産地であり、この国の「アルマトイ」という地名は現地語で「リンゴの街/リンゴの里」という意味。原産地のリンゴはどんな味がして、その土地でどんな評価を受けているんだろう。リンゴを求めて世界を巡れるとしたら、それはもの凄くエキサイティングな体験になると思う。
