Full recognition of the article as libel would involve a few things: 1) recognizing that it was not only bad journalism—poorly sourced, etc—but racist defamation. That its intent was to incite hostility against a group of people. 2) recognize that its an example of a whole class of such articles, which again, not only circulate distorted narratives or disinformation but function as racism.

The Kristof affair is a breaking point bc it poses the central question: are you allowed to say absolutely anything about Israel? Or are there boundaries that derive from recognizing the existence of antizionist bigotry? And so if NYT were to walk back the article, it could be significant. But exactly bc a whole complex of antizionism denial rests on not doing so, my intuition is that they will do their best to push through this one.

@Bushra1Shaikh Not a good response. Are the claims presented about Iran true or aren't they? I don't know, but immediately deflecting to the evils of the U.S., which are certainly myriad, is not a good look.

Apparently, certain European states have failed to grasp the profound shifts in the international landscape. The era of Iran's strategic patience has come to an end. Any attempt to impose sanctions on Iran will be regarded as a hostile act. Should they commit this mistake, they will bear full responsibility for the consequences. @FCDOGovUK
