I just watched a video of an American reacting to a German highschool and he was very confused that every student had a pencil case (didn't know what it was for at first)??? Where do Americans put all their pens for school????

@eclairJoss my backpack in school had all these pockets specifically for pens and pencils like this one. pencil case felt like overkill at that point.

@eclairJoss @MennoWieken At least high schools in Bavaria have all switched to ipads here, kids don't even have a back pack anymore, since books and their notes are all online now. No idea about other school types though.

@MennoWieken Idk man I went to school 10 years ago lmao but Germany IS super behind on that and everyone here hates it. But u still shouldn't act like American schools don't use pens anymore 🧐

@eclairJoss Your high schools work with pens in Germany? Still? In 2026? I would be surprised too about pencil cases and would've asked where the laptops are. Wouldn't it be time for Germany to catch up a bit of their lag in digitisation?

@eclairJoss Tbh hab ich in den letzten 2-3 Jahren auch gemacht. Hatte vorne am Rucksack ein kleines Fach und da war dann alles an Schreibkram drin.

@moksoriwa That's very interesting! When I went to school (Germany) every kid had a pencil case bc the school actually gave out material lists, which colored pencils you need, ink pens, watercolors etc & also which kind of pencil case lol dunno if that was just my school tho...

dont know what the kiddos are doing now or not but pencil cases were a lot rarer to carry around if you werent an art kid/super type A after elementary/middle school (1st-7th/8th grade). by highschool we had lockers so id only bring what i needed based on that class
