You can’t serve two masters. If you pursue craftsmanship in the arts in this day and age, You will naturally have to move at a pace and with an intention that will make you feel like you’re being left behind. We are trying to replace what is irreplaceable with speed and aesthetics and it just can’t be. Now we want our artists brandable, and we want them to be machines, we scarcely give them time to feel their way through their own becoming. This is because the ultimate end goal of art in the life of the artist is self actualization. It takes time and inner focus that is threatened by a world that would have artists make space for neither. The gap is getting wider, there’s almost no way to do inner work and live within the bounds of the machine. It is going to be a lonely road for artists that really want truth, but what else do we have? Dark days at present and darker ahead, nevertheless we must be present for all of it.

Telling the truth is deeply antisocial because at some point you will be forced to choose what matters most to you: the truth or the approval of the group.

One of my most deeply held beliefs is that refusing to name truth makes you stupid--literally degrades your intellect. Engaging in mental gymnastics to justify what's convenient but unevidenced, unjust but personally beneficial, 'rewires your neural map' in ways that degrade your overall ability to understand and analyze the world around you, which is a precondition for intelligence and creativity.

@benroy imo, the vehicle itself (much like the broader industry) will be forced to evolve as a consequence of what will happen in the coming years - for better or worse!

Evening thoughts: My main question about venture right now is to what extent VCs have an obligation to allocate money for good vs. just maximizing returns Open sub-questions: -If there is some obligation to The Good, what does good mean? Whose good? -If not, why not? Does having fiduciary responsibility to an investor base really mean maximizing returns no matter what the costs are? Like, where is the line there? >I realize funds aren’t charities, but it feels too nihilistic to be purely mercenary & only invest in random stuff without having a moral compass... maybe I’m naive, but I want to believe you can make bets that lead to positive outcomes + make money at the same time. That said, there's a benefit to having money - purely - as an end goal because it's a very clear and measurable telos... it's just murkier trying to measure quality/competence in investing if you're doing that based on qualitative floofy stuff like worldview. I guess in some ways as an LP you're making a decision to invest in a fund in part by how much you trust the managing partners' character + ability, so some of this is squishy from the outset. But I think most people just care about returns, and assuming you're not violating the law, that's it. Somehow all of this feels unsatisfying to me though... I just think the ends matter & not only the means. But it can be tricky to put that into practice. I get it.

The biggest risk I'm taking this year is spending most of my time & energy writing a book ...in a world where most people don't read anymore ...with a ~5% chance of getting professionally published -where 98% of my friends don't even understand why I would bother spending my time doing this ...leaving a lot of money & opportunity on the table ...possibly screwing up my career trajectory ...plus falling behind on AI tools / tech literacy, all at the same time And yet, despite these things, I know with 100% of my soul this book is what I need to be working on, and if afterwards I get sent to the robot mines for the rest of my days & all I accomplished in life was the book... it would still be worth it. >I'm hyped to show some of you this thing when it's done, wish me luck

I’m building something for people that make music. Not people aspiring to be professional artists, but people like me and many of my friends who make music as a creative act and expression in itself. If this is you and you’re curious, please drop a 👋 here & I’ll keep you posted!

Music is very clearly the greatest form of art, and the written word is (probably) second. It is genuinely amazing that the human brain is able to enjoy both simultaneously.

A very big, small (~12lb) life update… Last month, I became a dad! The little lad is healthy and @mrsfunghibull is recovering slowly but surely No matter how many times I’ve tried to string them together, there just aren’t words to describe the experience — of witnessing the woman you love bring an impossibly tiny human being into this world, or any of the time since While all is good, we had a couple complications that have called for me to take a bit more time than planned to be present for the fam. Thankfully things are improving and I’m hyped to get back to work in a more visible way and connect with friends here again To everyone that’s reached out — thank you so much for the kind words and for thinking of us! I’m massively behind on DMs etc. and will do my best to get back to you all asap Grateful to you all, to my incredible teams for holding it down in my stead, and of course to Meela for being the phenomenal wife, mother and woman she is 🤍

if you read pre-enlightenment texts from any culture you’ll find huge parts of the population engaged in deals with demons and trickster gods to achieve wealth / material ends our times will make sense when you realize this practice never went away. it’s everywhere.
