@fchollet This reminds me of CAD systems. When they were introduced, they were sold as a way to make drawings faster. What actually happened is that engineers made more drawings of different versions of an idea and picked the best one. Not faster, better.

The quantity of code that devs ship has roughly 10xed. But net developer productivity (value created by unit of time) is only up by a bit, if at all. Part of it is that the additional code is solving more incremental problems. A bigger part is that the new code is creating problems of its own.

18 year old university student is stabbed four times and runs for help. The police leap into action: they handcuff the student in case he said something racist, then watch as he drowns in his own blood.

George Bernard Shaw stood in Stalin's USSR in 1931, watching millions starve to death, and declared there was no famine at all. The Nobel Prize-winning playwright didn't just stay silent about the horror unfolding around him. He actively promoted the lie that would help Stalin cover up one of history's greatest atrocities. Shaw toured Ukraine during the height of the Holodomor, when Soviet grain requisitions had stripped peasants of every scrap of food. Conservative estimates put the death toll at 3.5 million Ukrainians. Shaw saw the empty villages, the skeletal survivors, the mass graves. Then he signed a public letter praising Stalin's "remarkable progress" and told Western journalists that reports of famine were capitalist propaganda. Why would an intelligent man become Stalin's useful idiot? Shaw believed in central planning with religious fervor. He thought brilliant intellectuals like himself could design society better than millions of individuals making their own choices. When confronted with central planning's inevitable result (mass death), he chose to lie rather than admit his ideology killed people. Shaw preferred beautiful theory to ugly facts. Shaw deliberately used his celebrity status to give Stalin cover while Ukrainian children died of starvation. He returned to Britain and spent years defending Soviet policies, even as refugee testimonies and photographic evidence exposed the genocide. The man who wrote about moral awakening in "Pygmalion" had abandoned his own moral compass entirely. Free market economists warned that socialist calculation was impossible, that without prices and property rights, economies would collapse into chaos and death. Shaw dismissed these warnings as bourgeois nonsense while standing ankle-deep in their vindication.

I urge you to watch this because if not any normal sane person would never believe this came from a Council meeting in Britain in 2026. This here is @reformparty_uk in action, this is what Reform Voters voted for & they want more of it & they get angry when we say they're Thick

This is what people voted for...fucking hell :D Bizarre moment Reform Councillor Kieran Lay, Thorne and Moorends Ward, asks Full Council for measures to monitor UFO activity as part of reopening Doncaster Sheffield Airport. Step 1- Work towards cutting council tax. Step 2- Set up a panel for UAP sightings. Couldn't make this up... #doncasterreform #reform

Nearly 600,000 people paid $100 deposits for the Trump family's gold "T1" smartphone — a $499 "Made in USA" phone launched in June 2025 by Don Jr. and Eric Trump. They promised delivery by late summer 2025. Then November. Then December. Then Q1 2026. Now? The release date has been quietly DELETED from the website entirely. And here's the kicker — Trump Mobile just rewrote their terms of service in April 2026 to say your $100 deposit "does not constitute a completed purchase and does not create a binding legal contract." They literally redefined your money as a "conditional opportunity" — and made it non-refundable. No phone. No refund. No accountability. That's $59 MILLION collected from loyal supporters who trusted this family. Gone. Let that sink in: This is a president whose sons launched a company that took money from hundreds of thousands of Americans, missed every single deadline, changed the rules after the fact, and walked away clean. Name ONE other president — just ONE — who used their time in the White House to sell phones, NFTs, crypto, sneakers, and Bibles to their own supporters. I'll wait. 🦗 While families are choosing between groceries and rent, while Americans are working two and three jobs just to survive — THIS family is running what experts and watchdog groups are calling a textbook grift operation. The Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington called Trump Mobile "an unbelievable way for Trump to profit while in office." MAGA supporters who bought the phone are now FURIOUS on their own forums. Even THEY are calling it a scam. This isn't left vs. right anymore — this is a sitting president's family stealing from their own base in broad daylight. Trump University. Trump condos. Trump crypto. Trump NFTs. Trump sneakers. Trump Bibles. And now — Trump phones that don't exist.

“VICTORY” After the war, between 200,000 and 300,000 disabled veterans were allegedly destroyed in concentration-style camps on Valaam Island. Among the victims were several hundred so-called Heroes of the Soviet Union. According to these accounts, if families protested, the security services eliminated entire families, including infants. These men were never lucky enough to kiss their wives goodbye at train stations or embrace their children after returning home. They never marched in Victory Day parades. They could not march — because many of them no longer had legs. In 1946, during a single night, police units reportedly gathered disabled veterans from major Soviet cities, loaded them onto trains, and deported them to remote institutions such as Solovki without trial or investigation. Some accounts claim there was a direct order from Joseph Stalin, carried out by Marshal Georgy Zhukov. A second campaign against homeless disabled veterans allegedly took place in the 1950s. In February 1954, Soviet Interior Minister Sergei Kruglov sent a memorandum to Nikita Khrushchev and Georgy Malenkov stating: “Despite all measures taken, begging continues to exist in major cities and industrial centers of the country.” The report noted that 70% of detained beggars were disabled veterans or disabled workers. Special institutions resembling prison camps were organized on Valaam, near Kharkiv, in Omsk, Barnaul, and on Sakhalin. These facilities reportedly belonged to the Soviet Ministry of Internal Affairs. Writer Ivan Vlasenko later recalled: “In 1953, one could not help noticing the huge number of war-invalid beggars: men with terrible empty eye sockets, without arms, but most of all without legs. They were especially heartbreaking because they were forced to look at the world from below upward. Strapped by belts to little wooden carts, they seemed fused to them forever. Most were only 30–35 years old. They often played accordions and sang ‘The Sea Spread Wide,’ while others simply begged ‘for Christ’s sake.’ At every station they would climb into train cars — the legless pulling themselves up by handrails with their arms — traveling toward Kyiv, where the best chance to survive awaited.” “And then, in the spring of 1954, the crippled beggars disappeared. Not fewer — simply gone. Passengers on commuter trains anxiously asked each other: where had the disabled veterans gone? Only one thing was known for certain: the police had taken them away. Where? Why? Nobody knew. People talked about it for a while, and then forgot. I forgot too.” — Valentina Druzhinina, 2020
