Smith earned a fortune during her prime, but her luxurious lifestyle and the economic toll of the Great Depression left her in financial ruin. She died penniless in New York in 1946. However, her role in bringing Black musical traditions into mainstream white culture remains unassailable. /end

Smith’s commercial success also forced a cultural shift. Through “Crazy Blues,” Smith brought authentic African American emotional experiences into mainstream American living rooms. She created a space for later female artists to sing about heartbreak, poverty and independence. /7

The record sold an astonishing 75,000 copies in its first month and eventually surpassed one million copies. Its success revolutionized the music industry. It revealed the economic power of Black consumers, paving the way for the “race records” era and opening doors for Black recording artists. /6

In February 1920, Smith recorded “That Thing Called Love” and “You Can’t Keep a Good Man Down.” The success of that first record led Okeh to bring her back in August 1920 to record “Crazy Blues,” backed by the Jazz Hounds. It was the first commercial vocal blues recording by a Black artist. /5

Smith transitioned from a successful stage performer to a recording pioneer in 1920. Black songwriter and music publisher Perry Bradford began pitching Black artists to major record labels. Bradford convinced Fred Hager, the artists and repertoire director at Okeh Records, to audition Smith. /4

By 1913, Smith decided to settle in New York City to pursue a solo career. She found steady work as a singer and dancer in Harlem venues, including Baron Wilkins’ Little Savoy. She became a sought-after musical theater actress, known for her powerful singing voice and charismatic stage presence. /3

Smith showed an early talent for singing and dancing in local Cincinnati neighborhoods. Around age 10, she left home to tour with a Black vaudeville troupe called the Four Mitchell Brothers. By her early teens, she danced as a chorus girl with the “Smart Set” company, traveling across the U.S. /2

#ResistanceRoots Mamie Smith was born on this day in 1891 in Cincinnati. The first African American artist to make a commercial vocal blues recording, she was known as the “Queen of the Blues.” She was also a vaudeville singer, dancer and actress who opened doors for future Black female artists. /1
