A great presentation at #Connections2023 on #wargaming in the nuclear environment! Wargames should not end with nuclear use. We need to play through the difficult decisions and consequences.
I did this thing at this website. Lists of games to learn from by people who teach professional game design. It will also be a panel at Connections 2023 Wargaming Conference. paxsims.wordpress.com/2023/05/01/top…
@SebastianBae Then get a game there. It's not as hard as it looks. I once almost got a game at Reunion, which would have been so cool. It was on piracy. Even though I hate travel, and its a looong flight, I'd go to Reunion.
The MORS Journal of Wargaming is (finally) live. John Curry and I are the co-editors. The Journal covers all aspects of professional gaming, from theory to practice to reports on games. Bi-annual. Submissions welcome! mors.org/Publications/M…
@ADragoons I just did, no impact so far. Also, you can always misspell it...or use an euphamism. Policing addresses is going to be harder given the variety.
You can now follow me over at Mast0d0n at Porphyry@defcon.social. Send me a message and I'll be happy to follow you. Hopefully wargaming twitter is migrating somewhere, if not there, let me know where.
If you are interested in applying for the scholarship please contact the MORS staff. You must be a currently enrolled undergrad or graduate student to qualify.
Thanks to Nathalie Marver-Kwon for being our first scholarship attendee at the MORS Wargaming Certificate Course. And for the great writeup on PAXsims. paxsims.wordpress.com/2022/11/05/a-s…
You want to teach tactics, this is how you can do it; hands on, force-on-force exploration through analog simulation. Cheap, fast, and easy to set-up. Wargaming works. We’ll continue to refine the game and see how to incorporate it into our processes. @SebastianBae@BarrickTim
Today in the HQ, some of the staff created a barebones wargame using a standard map, some bingo chips, and images of units with attack, defence, and movement values. This came about from previous PD in the HQ and some dissatisfaction with the rudimentary wargaming in in OPP.
@SebastianBae@KrisjandR@RambaKy@C_M_Dougherty@Wojtowicz_N We are still working on the details of how the journal will take submissions and such. If anyone wants details on the content and policies just let me know. But, yeah, its "coming soon"...
I don’t think we’ve reached peak wargaming, so much as we’ve reached a point where demand far outstrips quality supply. We need more experienced designers, more good red teamers, & more rigorous back end analysis & incorporation w/other methods.
@SebastianBae@CNA_org@pewtrusts@marsecgina This is yet another example of nukes being ignored in games because designers are wary of crossing the nuclear threshold and modeling the effects. I mean, think of all the fish you could get with just one weapon...
Designing "At Any Cost" -- a @CNA_org game about #IUU fishing for @pewtrusts -- continues to be incredibly intellectually engaging and fun. The game stills needs some tweaks and adjustments, but it is almost ready for prime time. @marsecgina
