The #MichaelMovie would’ve been a solid 10/10, 5-star Letterboxd moment, if it ended with a Doctor Strange-style portal opening, and out steps Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury, Taron Egerton as Elton John, Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan, Jennifer Hudson as Aretha Franklin, Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash, Austin Butler as Elvis, and Jeremy Allen White as The Boss. Then Rami’s Freddie turns to Michael and says: “Darling…...I’m putting together a team” Cut to a tease of Paul Mescal, Harris Dickinson, Joseph Quinn, and Barry Keoghan as The Beatles, launching the ultimate “MCU” (Music Cinematic Universe) with their mission to take down Justin Bieber. Missed opportunity 🥲

They already did that though. ADR was used with Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones, they tried it with other actors, and even had the film's editor, who’s a native Hungarian speaker, step in, and it still didn’t fully work. So whether you like it or not, the additional tools weren’t the first option, they were a last resort after other methods didn’t land, and it was done with full consent from both actors. And the use of AI here isn’t that different from singers using autotune, it’s still their performance, and it shouldn’t discredit how good they were in the film. It’s just lightly refined, not replaced. We should absolutely have an open discussion about this process, but a lot of the complaints come from misunderstanding how it actually works. Many people act like Brody and Jones didn’t do the work themselves and were “replaced” by AI and that The Academy should've disqualified The Brutalist for any awards consideration, when that was never the case.

@blewis1103 they could have dubbed over it or had him redo it instead of using AI over it .. two things can be true - he deserved an oscar for his performance AND using ai in a film production - whether in a smaller scene or even a limited capacity is wrong and needs to be called out

Adrien Brody did not use AI for his performance in The Brutalist. The post-production team used AI to pitch-correct a couple of lines (one scene in a 3 hour movie) where he spoke Hungarian. We don’t have to keep doing this in 2026.

Isa Briones calls out fans who scream at her during her Broadway show: “Once again, Broadway is not a circus. Do not yell whatever you want at the performers. Yelling ‘when are you going to finish your charts’ before I sing ‘Who’s Sorry Now?’ is f*cking disrespectful to the performers onstage and your fellow audience members. Y’all are pissin’ me off.”

What annoys me most is that the making of Thriller could’ve been a genuinely distinctive film that actually explores Michael Jackson’s creative process, but instead we get a few shallow fragments like him watching a horror movie with his mom, dancing around, jotting down song titles and we’re somehow expected to accept that as a complete portrayal of his artistic process?

it’s amazing how little narrative momentum there is in Michael, and how passive his relationship to his art seems. it’s kind of an insult to his talent despite also giving all his collaborators short shrift. there’s no insight into his craft, or the development of his taste.

Seeing so many music biopics has trained me to expect more than a lazy greatest-hits checklist, so if this is the most bland, lifeless way you can portray Michael Jackson’s creative process, that’s a serious failure of a storytelling in my opinion

I genuinely cannot explain how badly I need to experience this transition in the theater again bc the out of body experience I had in my seat 😵‍💫
