So much fun to be at the Devil Wears Prada 2 Premiere with my daughter Kate. And I couldn’t be more proud of my talented sister Wendy Finerman - producer of DWP2 and DWP-and so many other great movies.

@olsonplanner @MohammedAlo Tyler, you’re so right. What’s more, debt is a very personal thing. Some people are comfortable with it and some people hate it. You can make all the math arguments you want but if somebody just wants to reduce debt then that’s ok in most cases

@MohammedAlo Joe did speak with a financial advisor - me. These types of decisions don't warrant an always or never mentality. There are soooo many decisions we make in life that aren't wealth accumulation efficient but are nevertheless the right decision for us.

@EricBalchunas Sorry, Eric. Echoes of losing my own father some years ago and how painful that was. Peace be with you.

Back today after being out of commission for a while. I lost my dad about 10 days ago. We were close. I knew the day would come, he was declining health-wise, but it didn't soften the blow. But he lived a full life and we spent good time together recently and that is comforting.

@Maura_Gillespie Why would Fetterman want the approval of the playground bully, the one who mocked him so viciously a few years ago? Oh I get it: politics

@AdviserCounsel I’m getting whiplash from all of this. The one thing I agree with the CFP board is that we basically treat everything from a fiduciary standpoint which I think is healthy for all concerned.

Most recent amendments to the DOL Fiduciary Rule formally dead as of today in ruling by Judge Kernodle of USDC ED Tex. I'm beginning to lose count of the years and iterations of the rule. * Unamended PTE 2020-02 remains valid law.
Max Schatzow@AdviserCounsel

I’ve been working with clients for almost a decade on 3 different versions of the DOL fiduciary rule. It will likely end up being 4 versions over a decade+. It’s a major sign of disfunction.

@zachmelloh26 @AdviserCounsel I think you misunderstood my comment. I didn’t mean that the CERTIFICATION exam was not proctored; I meant that the instruction and the modular tests were done in person. Obviously that has all moved online starting probably in the late ‘90s.

What are you talking about? Most people still taking exam still do a multi day in class instruction. You still have to complete a coursework requirement. You still have to take an exam that is 6-7 hours in one sitting from what I remember. I would rather it be two days. It is incredibly difficult to focus for that long in one sitting.

Just saw the new CFP commercial on ESPN. The whole pitch is that CFPs have to act in your best interest, but that is basically the same standard for any registered investment adviser. So why does it “gotta be a CFP?”

@AdviserCounsel 2/2 nowadays, under the premise that there aren’t going to be enough financial advisors, they’re handing out CFP‘s like Halloween candy. It feels like a money grab. I would like to know how the CFP org’s budget has changed over the past 15 years. Just a simple glance at the P&Ls

@AdviserCounsel 1/2 Older CFP here. Back in the day, we had live classroom instruction and had to do our modular exams in a room with a proctor. Then of course the two day comprehensive exam. It was rigorous and I felt proud when I passed. After that, the three years’ experience requirement

@EricBalchunas Eric, you’re not even half as precious as Morrissey. How can you understand what this man has gone through? Ask me, ask me, ask me, ask me if you’ve heard this one before

It's Baaaaaack.. $USO (the 20yr old oil ETF that can't be killed) is the 6th most traded ETF today and has already traded a record $17b this week. It is up 28% since Iran strike (vs 9% for UNL and 1% for XLE) and 52% YTD. It holds front month futures again which are most sensitive to oil prices (it shifted to whole curve back when futures went negative but I guess it switched back).

@AdviserCounsel @BullandBaird We went RIA several years ago and it was the best decision for us. It’s not just the money; it’s a sense of control over how to invest, whom we decide to take on as clients, and not having a corporate chain-of-command to answer to.

@BullandBaird Because there are countless opportunities where the split is much better (or you keep everything less expenses). I’m also mostly referring to the advisor who has developed their own clients.

In this day and age, I don't really understand why you join an investment adviser/broker-dealer and agree to a 55/45 split of the revenues that you generate absent some other compelling reasons.

When Bitcoin was $126k we heard a lot of calls for $1,000,000. Now that was cut in half, the calls for $0 are all over the place. Bottom line, $65k area is a big level and one that should hold. So far, so good.

Love seeing the Super Bowl being played outdoors. Domes kill 10-15% of the aesthetics of football.
