Both MacDonald and Berry ask questions along the lines of, How do we live, What do we owe each other, What sustains us. They ask them in faith-filled registers that refuse reduction and preserve complexity.

MacDonald's parables and Berry's agrarian patience provoke similar attentions. Both insist you cannot force what must be given, cannot rush what requires seasons, cannot possess what you can only steward.
