@JamesBrownEFC No argument that the law is very definitely shite (!) because the defender has not gained anything from it hitting his hand over his head. And that’s my gripe — there’s no room for common sense at all. And that’s before you get to VAR and the “clear and obvious” argument

I don’t know who needs to hear it but it was 100% a handball in the Celtic game last night and a definite penalty - and I want Hearts to win the league.

@JamesBrownEFC You could argue his hand is only there because of the Celtic player’s shoulder forcing it up there and his hand doesn’t change the silhouette of his body one iota so it’s not definitively handball even by the strict letter of the law. It’s 💯not handball by the spirit of the law

@EFCLyndon Hand touching his forehead, not a natural position, ball strikes hand. It’s a pen and a handball.

@RichardRbw Judging by many of the comments I’m reading from fans north of the Border, it sounds like the SPL is worse!

@louis_john99222 We’ve won 1 game in 7, have arguably thrown away 7 points in the last 4 games and are in the process of blowing a rare chance to accelerate our recovery by qualifying for Europe, maybe even the Champions League. If you’re happy, crack on; some of us are a bit disappointed

MJ: “it’s almost better if Everton don’t score” I found myself thinking similar on Sunday. I felt better about our chances when the scores were level than when we were ahead. Until late on, obviously, where we’ve won games like at Newcastle and Fulham. Game management needs work

@ALANMYERSMEDIA If the home end at every ground in the PL and SPL featured a massive “THROW VAR IN THE BIN” banner on a co-ordinated weekend, it would send a decent message

@RyanG78_ I agree. For me, the bar for a penalty (where the odds are high it ends in a goal) should be very high and handball should only be given if the consensus (in the VAR age) is that it was deliberate. I wanted the Fernandes one given because that’s currently the standard decision

Obv I see why people want a pen based on what’s usually given but my point is I want the bar to change ⚽️ is better than being decided on accidental handball If u want goals given to opposition when ur centre half gets the ball booted at arm from yards away then all the best😂

Worth remembering PL clubs have the constitutional power to scrap VAR. Requires a two-thirds majority vote (14/20 clubs) to pass. While a formal vote to remove it was initiated by Wolves in June 2024, clubs overwhelmingly voted to keep it, but refereeing has only got worse since.

@torturedtoffee @Ianc1878 I was being semi-flippant on both counts but I would imagine that stopping throws into the area would be pretty easy to police if you wanted to

The full back planning last summer felt structurally incomplete. Everton added a development profile at left back who still hasn’t played. Then failed to raise the level at right back once Tete move collapsed. Too much unresolved work has now been carried into another window.

@RyanSoccerAA Well, in the last couple of games, neither has scored in line with their opportunities. And it's not luck in those instances, it's a lack of composure and killer instinct

@EFCLyndon Not really. Almost no one scores beyond their opportunities. That’s the point. You can’t ride luck all season.

Quite damning, really. Mentality called into question in a big way again. Moyes will point to the likes of KDH and Ndiaye wasting golden chances (and if they score, the narrative is different) but we've conceded 2+ a game since the international break. Just not good enough
Michael@greenallefc

Must win against a side with very little to play for. Go back in front on 47 minutes. Response? 2.1 xG conceded 6 big chances conceded 34% possession 69% pass accuracy 2 completed progressive passes by central midfielders Top work
