Everton will soon need to plan for life after Gana Gueye as their primary ball-winning midfielder. One profile that stands out statistically is Wolves’ João Gomes. Elite defensive output with signs of progression. A closer look at the data and Everton fit. Thread ↓

@KieranJ_1979 That’s fair. With Mika Godts, it’s one of those where the data and eye test can tell slightly different stories. The real question is whether his strengths hold up when the space and time disappear.

@ScoutTom_ Watched a few times & don’t rate him much at all. Especially to step in at PL level

Mika Godts is a strong recruitment test case Elite data for a U21 winger - shot volume, chance creation, heavy involvement - but projection is key. Profiles built on space and volume don’t always translate cleanly to Premier League Less about talent, more about context and role
Spencer Mossman@fc_mossman

📊🇧🇪 Mika Godts, data report ➡️ fluid, controlled, in rarified air in terms of u21 winger output this season + insanely productive this season, beating the absolute shit out of xG and xA with his realized output + finds good shots especially for a winger, this season he's unsustainably (I think) outperforming xG, but it honestly doesn't matter because his xG is incredible anyways + not much of a crosser, like his shooting, his chance creation is often sourced from cutting inside or simply accessing the penalty area first + involvement with "forward passing" is a sneaky good indicator for wingers... if they're important enough to drop deep because getting them touches early and often is a priority, that's just generally a good sign + is both flighty and explosive... a terror in space; 4th highest sprint speed in the UCL this season - when watching him it seems like he should be a better 1v1 dribbler than the numbers indicate, but that could just be wyscout weirdness, plus last year it were a good bit better, so maybe also a product of playing further forward/a touch more centrally this season (which also induced his end product spike) - not much of an oop work rate, which whatever at this level considering who he plays for and what he does on the ball, but might be an issue for a high pressing side - physically limited due to size, has just half of the two P's in PnP - also curious that he doesn't receive many long balls; perhaps linked to the positive of that he's ball to feet and it is a necessity to involve him early rather than to have him stretch the back lines, but worth noting considering his pace nonetheless 💬 I know the Hazard comps are easy to make, but I'm not sold on it. I mean this in a polite way, because I rate this guy more than most I think, but he's got some smaller but more productive Harvey Barnes to his game and his numbers. His data is crazy tho... the filter of u21 wingers to hit his level of shots + chances created, fwd passes, and prg runs is Vini Jr. Yildiz, Yamal 2x, and him. I think ultimately his size/strength will limit his top end ceiling, but there's that 5-10% outcome in his game where he's so good and so productive, it just simply does not matter.

@Iancroll1 Recency bias plays a big part here. Beto showed exactly what he can do, but he hasn’t replicated that level consistently enough across the season. One performance doesn’t define it - that level has to become the standard for Everton, not the exception.

Beto has taken some stick throughout his Everton career. Written off time and again. Criticism has largely been unfair, IMO. It’s obvious where his strengths lie. We haven’t played to them enough. Yesterday against Chelsea we did and he got his rewards. Buzzing for him.

Everything David Moyes has been building at Everton this season clicked tonight. The structure, the discipline, the execution - all there. That’s what it looks like when the system fully lands.

High turnovers have been a consistent strength for Everton all season. Today, they’ve finally matched it with clinical finishing against Chelsea, turning those moments into goals rather than letting them go to waste.

That pass from James Garner is top level. Sees it early, commits to it, executes it - that kind of quality in the final third is what keeps you in the England squad, not just gets you there.

@alexbe11 There’s definitely some truth in that. Moyes is very clear in what he wants structurally and tends to stick with it. It brings consistency but can limit flexibility when games call for something different.

@ScoutTom_ I do like Moyes, but he’s 100% a manager who almost always has a Plan A he likes to stick with regardless of all other factors

Interesting one from Moyes. Iroegbunam left out after a strong showing against Arsenal, where his energy and ball-winning really stood out. Feels like a game where that profile could have been useful again - especially against a midfield that will look to control phases.

@Progression1878 For James Garner, it’s about maintaining that consistency over time - that’s what turns a strong performer into a top-level player. The level is there. It’s about sustaining it now.

@ScoutTom_ What you think Tom? I think even if he can hold this level for significant period of his career it can be fruitful

James Garner getting an England call-up shouldn’t be a surprise. His level for Everton this season has been right up there - controlling games, progressing play, and stepping into a key role. The question now is where his ceiling actually sits.

Still look at those England CB options and think a fully fit Jarrad Branthwaite adds value...

Always find it interesting with Chelsea. Cobham keeps producing top young talent - Rio Ngumoha being a recent example of a player leaving due to the pathway. Yet the club still often seems quicker to sell those profiles and return to the market for the next young talent.

@PatricRidge Take control. It's turned into player v fans, which isn't good at all. The club should have been straight out with a statement last night.

@SteveKelly86 That’s partly on the club and manager though. If the recruitment structure only came together late, that suggests a lack of alignment between recruitment and what Moyes actually needs. The window didn’t really solve the squad’s key issues.

I know we lost but that team and squad have come on leaps and bounds to what we had, we’ve become competitive again.

@SteveKelly86 Agree. Yesterday was good. I’m just thinking on a broader scale. The overall level since he arrived has been quite similar. The underlying data hasn’t shifted massively either. It just feels like there’s more consistency now under Moyes. Maybe the real shift comes next season.

Everton needs to add depth to the squad - players Moyes will actually trust and use. Young players pathway doesn’t align with the manager’s approach. Club either needs to recruit profiles to fit Moyes’ demands or change direction. Misalignment has hurt Everton in many games now

@PatricRidge @Benjwinst String of poor individual errors. It's frustrating to watch, but there are differences at this level with small lapses. Shame as Everton did well. Squad needs massively improving. Hopefully, the club will make good moves in the summer.

@ScoutTom_ @Benjwinst Cross should be stopped yes, but it's going to happen in dying moments. Pickford stays at home, that probably gets dealt with, but it's a fantastic ball. As said, Raya got away with 3 of them at the other end.

Really didn’t deserve to lose that game, nullified Arsenal and one mistake at the very death cost us. Commentators and sky absolutely crying it in.
