I also really only saw drinking as a social action until I went to culinary school and learned more about it in the context of food and flavors

It’s also the way parents teach their children about it. I was taught/shown to drink responsibly from a young age because they knew if you took the stigma away that it wouldn’t become something to be used as rebellion. I never had a heavy drinking phase because of it.
