For generations, Iranians have sung Morgh-e Sahar, the Bird of Dawn, a song that calls on the caged bird to break free and bring the light of morning after a long dark night. “Dawn bird, sing your song, Break this cage and turn it upside down, Let the song of freedom be heard.” The courage of the Iranian people has never been in doubt. For decades they have endured prison, exile, torture, and bullets, yet the dream of a free Iran has never died. Tonight that courage must be paired with wisdom. Protect yourselves. Stay sheltered. Preserve your strength and protect your loved ones until the conditions are right. History shows that freedom comes when a nation rises together at the right moment. And do not mistake the celebration you may see from Iranians as indifference to the suffering of innocents. A people can feel joy at the fall of an evil dictator and the dismantling of a brutal regime while still holding space to mourn the innocent. We mourn all those who have suffered over the last forty-seven years: the men and women killed, imprisoned, raped, tortured, and silenced by this regime; the tens of thousands whose lives were crushed in moments of repression; and the innocent lives lost in the chaos of conflict. We mourn the deaths or harm of any Iranians who had nothing to do with this regime. And we honor the brave Americans and Israelis soldiers who sacrifice their lives in the struggle to liberate Iran from tyranny. The Iranian heart is capable of both grief and hope at the same time. The long night has been heavy, but the song of Morgh-e Sahar reminds us that dawn always comes. Thinking of everyone in Iran tonight. Stay safe. Protect one another. We have survived 5,000 years as a people and a nation and we will survive and thrive again. May the light of a free Iran soon rise over the land of Cyrus.

To the "anti-war" liberals sipping lattes while lecturing us on peace: I spent the first 8 years of my life in bomb shelters during the longest war of the 20th century. Don’t you dare tell me what war looks like. I know the sound of sirens. But I also know what it's like to watch a 16-year-old boy fall to his death because he was running from police who raided a party for the "crime" of dancing. I know the scream of a mother identifying her daughter’s body-murdered for a few loose strands of hair. You want "peace" because it keeps your conscience clean. You’d rather Iranians rot in a silent, "stable" graveyard under the Islamic Regime's gender apartheid than witness the chaos of their liberation. Iranians in Iran aren't naive. They know the West acts for its own interests. But they have reached the point where the gamble of a war is more hopeful than the certainty of this regime. If they are willing to risk everything to breathe, who the hell are you to tell them to stay in their cage? Stop using their "safety" as an excuse for your cowardice. Iranians want a life, not just a pulse.

For years, I advocated for U.S.-Iran rapprochement and believed that we could one day ally with the Islamic Republic. This was very stupid on my part; it's probably the idea I'm most ashamed of having held. I apologize for being an idiot.

@gfodor yes they know, they don’t even need much of an intelligence service, the families of the victims of the January massacre have openly declared their intention for revenge during the 40th day ceremonies of the victims last week.

I tend to believe posts like this. These people witnessed an indescriminate, monsterous massacre of their youth a month ago. I believe the administration and the intel services know the people of Iran are going to overrun the streets in rage when the time comes. I know I would.
