I have now started to transition to the other app. I will not post science here. Interested in the science of me and my coworkers? Same username. This platform has been used for manipulation of public opinion by the owner. Fingers crossed 🤞 interesting folks will transition too

The ILAS community mourns the loss of one of its leaders, Professor Nick Higham, from the University of Manchester. He passed away on January 20, 2024 at the age of 62, after a battle with cancer. He will be sorely missed.

It's always a pleasure to improve the learning experience for students. This edition of the matrix computations course involved a lot of new videos. Learn about matrix sign computation in 5 minutes. 🤓 youtu.be/mJJwUClr8lE?si…

On my way to the office early morning. Or is it Hogwarts? I hope the exams have been magically corrected by themselves. #KTHuniversity

I have two books in Russian in my office. Published in Kiev, Ukraine, Soviet union. The Ukrainian people have the right to decide their future. Including language. 🇺🇦

@riakymch I was told it has the best presentation of splines. So who knows... but I'll use it in my fireplace if I'm out of space in my bookshelf or the electricity prices go bonanza. 🔥

@ejarlebring Interesting: the city in RU while the published in UA. What is the 2nd? I doubt that this has any value now. In fact, it skimmed it long time ago and it seemed boring&old -- recycle

A lot of attention how chatgpt will disrupt teaching. On the contrary, teaching has a lot to gain from this technique.

ChatGPT is the last nail on the coffin, for coding interviews. Three examples:

Beware of using #chatGPT for math. Here is its answer to the exam question in my course in numerical linear algebra. Looks very convincing but most of it is completely wrong. And also self-contradictory.

@ejarlebring I only noticed that the vector b is probably missing in the Arnoldi approximation after the f(A) at 0:17😋

@t_homas_mach The chatbot ai gives put a lot of attention on language correctness. Less on factual correctness it seems.

I tried it out with one of the questions from the last homework assignment of my current lecture on linear algebra. The answer sounds pretty good, but (un)fortunately is wrong.

I have helped run an AI-based entrepreneurship program for years, written papers on the econ of AI, and follow the field quite closely. Nonetheless, I am *shocked* by how good OpenAI's new chat (chat.openai.com/chat) is. E.g., you can no longer give take-home exams/homework.

@Dirque_L Even as a native speaker I find the wording strange. Sounds like you will be opposing the entire faculty of the department. Go for it!
