@cap1096 I unfortunately can’t be there, but my poster will! A co-author/mentor, David with NPS, will be presenting it. He’s great and you should definitely say hi 😊 He does a lot of collaboration with MSU.

Any tips for networking at a conference as a prospective grad student? I’m going to a Yellowstone Science conference for my job but am also hoping to use it as an opportunity to help in the grad search process. Networking is very intimidating 😬 and I gotta put my brave face on!

@Dendrochronicle That’s so interesting! It’s a similar concept here. Pine “barrens” refers to sandy, nutrient-poor soils that primarily support open-canopy pitch pine. European colonizers weren’t able to grow crops on this soil, so they called these communities “barrens”!

@ejjamis Excellent topic. I research old woodlands in Scotland-that term ‘barren’ was used in historic documents here-‘barren wood’ was the less valuable tree taxa (not oak or pine) the tenantry were allowed to use. What does ‘pinebarren’ mean there please? Wonder if there’s a connection!

every time i find painted trillium (Trillium undulatum) is like the first time: an audible gasp, a few minutes basking in the glory, and a mini photoshoot to get all the best angles. then rinse and repeat for literally every individual in the population #wildflowers #botany

once every 20 years, researchers at Michigan State University sneak out to a secret spot on campus in the dead of night to dig up one of the world's oldest experiments. it happened last week. i wrote it up for the NYT: nytimes.com/2021/04/21/sci…

I have to get this off my chest(nut), we found a mature American Chestnut! Thanks to chestnut blight, it's a rare find to see one in the overstory, so needless to say, today was quite the treat #chestnut #AmericanChestnut
