Bashir el-Rufai, the son of the former Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, has divorced his wife and is marrying again. Ideally, this would not be news. Other former and current governors have children, and some have likely divorced their wives and remarried. I cannot recall reading about this in newspapers. Why is Bashir’s being reported by the nation’s major news media? Well, I am only enthusiastic about journalism. Still, one possible reason is Bashir’s decision to publicise his marital life on social media. Thus, he now has so-called online in-laws who “deserve” to know what goes on in the marriage. I have seen people far less well known and with no connection to politics come online to update their “in-laws” on their marriages. Some of them are close to me. One of them - who will likely read this post - has now changed and has repeatedly expressed regret for his previous actions in publicising his family affairs. I am not condemning your choices to inform and keep updating your social media friends and followers about your marital status. However, I would want you to always reflect on the implications of your actions. I wouldn’t want you to regret doing something that is entirely unnecessary and avoidable. May we be guided, amin. May Allah (SWT) continue to bless our marriages, amin. Muhsin
