Doctors almost never write "sadness" as a cause of death. Marjane Satrapi's family used the word anyway. She was 56, and they say she died of it a little over a year after she lost the love of her life. Marjane grew up in Iran, a kid who loved punk music and mouthed off to her teachers, right as the country around her turned strict and frightening. She drew the whole thing, the scary parts and the funny parts, in plain black and white, and turned it into a comic book called Persepolis. The girl in the jean jacket on the right side of this picture is her. It sold more than two million copies and ended up on school reading lists around the world. In 2007 she helped turn it into a hand-drawn animated movie. It won one of the top prizes at the Cannes Film Festival and earned an Oscar nomination, the first one ever handed to a woman in the animated-film category. She made other kinds of movies too, including a horror comedy with Ryan Reynolds. She once said the only two things you keep at the very end are your dignity and your style. She kept both. The man she lost was a filmmaker named Mattias Ripa. Years earlier, he had been one of the people who turned Persepolis into English so the rest of the world could read it. The girl in the jean jacket grew up to make millions of people care about a childhood half a world from their own. In the end, she could not stay without him.

The Breaking Bad pilot has a topless scene. When it aired on AMC, the nudity got blurred out. The FCC had nothing to do with that, because it has no power over cable, basic or premium. What actually covered it up was money. Vince Gilligan wrote that pilot hoping to sell it to HBO. On HBO and channels like it, you pay a monthly fee and there are no ads, so they can show almost anything. A topless scene was nothing unusual. Then HBO passed, and the show landed on AMC, a regular cable channel that runs commercials. The FCC only controls the free channels you pull in with an antenna, like ABC and NBC. It's never controlled cable. Cable is something you choose to pay for, so the courts ruled those decency laws don't apply to it. AMC could have shown that scene exactly as Gilligan filmed it. It blurred the scene to protect its income. Channels like AMC make their money from advertisers, and no brand wants its ad running next to a nude shot. So AMC played it safe. HBO never had that worry. Its cash comes straight from the people who pay for it, with no advertisers to keep happy, which is why the pay channels can get away with so much more. Gilligan shopped the script everywhere and kept hearing no. TNT liked it but didn't want a hero who cooks meth, and asked if he could counterfeit money instead. HBO barely looked at him in the room. Showtime already had a similar show called Weeds, about a suburban mom selling drugs. AMC, a small movie channel making its first real shows, took the chance. So that blur is the last piece of a racier show. Breaking Bad was built for the channels you pay extra for, and it ended up on one that survives on ads.

Fernanda Torres grew up in the shadow of a Brazilian acting legend, which sounds like an impossible standard to live up to. The remarkable part is that she didn’t spend her career escaping the comparison. She became acclaimed enough to stand alongside it.
