بحسب آخر استطلاع، فإنّ غالبية الدروز والمسيحيين والسنّة تؤيّد السلام مع إسرائيل، فيما يرفضه معظم الشيعة. لكن الحقيقة أنّ القضية لم تعد مسألة حرب أو سلام بقدر ما هي مسألة قبول أو رفض لهيمنة حزب الله على لبنان. جزء كبير من الشيعة يقبل بهذا الواقع، فيما ترفضه بقية المكوّنات اللبنانية. ولا يمكن فرض مشروع طرف على الآخرين بالقوة، ولا إلغاء جماعة لإجبارها على التكيّف مع خيارات لا تريدها. إذا كان جمهور حزب الله يريد دولة على نموذج الحزب، فالمناطق الخاضعة لنفوذه باتت معروفة وواضحة إلى حدّ كبير. أمّا بقيّة اللبنانيين فلهم حقّ اختيار نموذج مختلف للدولة والحياة. لذلك، قد تصبح فكرة الانفصال الحلّ الوحيد الواقعي لتجنّب صراع دائم لا نهاية له.
