Yet a crisis mentality appears to be taking hold. Exhibit A: South Carolina legislators racing to override the state utility commission to fast-track a major new gas plant, as @postandcourier has documented in a new special report. (3/8) postandcourier.com/news/special_r…

Is there a US "grid crisis" at hand due to data center & factory expansion? No. But doomsday thinking appears to be spreading and increasing the risk of poor decision-making.🧵(1/8)

@fredstaffordcs This is a tricky one - need to look closely at those utility load forecasts. They are usually quite wrong.

Implication here is new industrial demand outside Southeast is not being met primarily w/ new gas capacity. Is that really true? It's just an easier analysis for the Southeast b/c you just look at utility plans, not myriad IPP projects in queue. eenews.net/articles/south…

@fredstaffordcs All true - only commenting on the residual skepticism that exists amongst regulators and legislators.

@electricgeog I'd also point out the escalating costs and delays involved in restructured states' incentives for renewable developers, to be shouldered by ratepayers. And still hinges on big, expensive, lengthy infrastructure development in offshore wind and transmission projects.

👏 Victory for nuclear-inclusive decarb policies in NC. State GOP overrides Dem governor's veto of bill to change renewable portfolio standard law to a "clean" one that includes nuclear. All state Senate Dems opposed; see one dumb reason in quote below. carolinajournal.com/nc-legislature…

Breaking News: The North Carolina legislature just overrode the governor's veto of a bill that would replace the state's renewable portfolio standard with a clean energy standard that includes nuclear.

@Matthuber78 One of the states adding renewables at the fastest rate right now is doing almost entirely by the monopoly IOUs. Building 75 MW solar farms left and right. It’s Florida - yes, that Florida. Not perfect by any means, but evidence of the power of centralized planning.

This is insane, obviously. Electricity should not be managed by mainly uncoordinated, competing private producers. Even though the capitalist, investor-owned utility system left lots to be desired, at least the costs and planning the system were coordinated by one entity. 15/x

Are you "outraged about the the interconnection queue"? Me too! There is more energy in the queue than we consume today! And most won't even be built! Madness! Well, the masses are clamoring, & I'm gonna deliver: A Marxist analysis of the interconnection queue problem. 1/x 🧵

This is important We continue using fossil fuels bc they are useful & portable, entire economies depend on them, no one is seriously planning phaseout & only 1/3 of public supports it, & clean energy is scaling too slow Forget DAC — be outraged about the interconnection queue

@Matthuber78 Amazingly there are only about 20 tax equity investors in solar (all banks), with two of them making up about 50% of investment! Transferability of tax credits was supposed to expand that pool - haven’t heard if that has been the case.

@electricgeog Yes! The models of regressive ratepayer financing vs. relying on the oligarchic tax equity investor class leaves a lot to be desired.

@Matthuber78 Maybe it’s time to increase corporate taxes as a convoluted renewable growth strategy.

@electricgeog Certainly plausible. Was Schumer involved in the negotiations to get the MVP through?

Incredible that climate activists keep arguing that NextEra political donations were "because of the Mountain Valley Pipeline" instead of "because the largest renewables developer in US stood to benefit tremendously from Schumer's guiding of IRA"
Climate Defiance@ClimateDefiance

BREAKING: we just fully shut down a fundraiser headlined by U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. Schumer took $283,200 from NextEra. In exchange he greenlit the Mountain Valley Pipeline. This is a death sentence for us. So we shut down his event. And we did not apologize.
