@elenaran Yeah, that’s what a couple local people told me. I immediately thought water moccasin because it was black and bear water but the size is wrong. Since when do you know about snakes?

Hiked around the lake at Cuivre River today and almost stepped on a large (3–6 ft.) black snake crossing the path. Then almost walked right by another hanging in a bush on the side of the trail 100 yards down. Scared the shit out of us twice. Water moccasin, or something else?

@mward Western rat snake is my guess, non-venomous

MO DOC site says that they don’t live north of the Missouri River… but not sure that’s a hard line. Didn’t see any more so I’m guessing they were mates? Anyway, if anybody knows anything about local wildlife I’m curious whether we were right to be scared.
