So honored and humbled to be a host on Angela’s Podcast.
The lessons in this book have contributed to helping four high school teams win state championships. If you want a culture seeped in love, selflessness, respect, compassion, trust, and accountability, this book will make that happen.
There is not one human being that walks the face of this earth who is not HUMAN! Meaning flawed. When teammates understand this to be true and let down their armor of protecting imperfection, real progress can be made concerning their meaningful connection with each other.
Selfishness is driven by FEAR. Every team has selfishness within its family. How are you influencing selflessness? Not by lecturing it but by finding ways to create the shift from within the team's heart. This is when it sticks. NOT FROM LECTURES! www.eliteperformancetoo-e
If I commit to pursuing being my absolute best, not for my gain but to us it to help others achieve their best, I get to receive the precious gift of love. Even if it means others succeed more than myself. This is where joy and purpose in life reside.

Is your team willing to work at addressing and working through their shortcomings and faults as people? It is not for the meek of heart. It is IMPOSSIBLE for a team to function at their absolute best if left unaddressed. There are some things that drills can’t fix.
If winning becomes the only thing that matters. If an overload of fear fuels it. If it gets most of our laser focus. If it comes at any cost. If it burns us out. We are lost. But most importantly, we have squandered what true mentoring and teaching athletes are all about!!
Heading to Denison University tomorrow morning to do several “Create Forever Teammates” workshops. Collaborating on “Purpose” and the intentional intrinsic work required for teammates to “Love” each other.
HONEST self-reflection helps reveal our shortcomings and is necessary for work to move toward our best selves. The courageous work begins when we take action required to change. Fear, or being familiar with the pain we are in, prevents the necessary work needed to change.
Winning, stats, physical strength, awards, etc., are not concrete building blocks to establish love within a team. Building love comes from intrinsic work. What exercises are you doing to build the muscle called love? The most powerful emotion known to humankind.
Selflessness includes a desire to help teammates succeed above yourself, and is uncommon. The primary block is FEAR. Is your team vulnerable enough to share and discuss their FEARS with each other? FEAR is a draining emotion. If we don’t address their FEARS, selfishness exists.
To love a teammate takes an intentional investment. It takes work. The degree to which a team loves each other will correlate with how well they handle adversity and how much they will run through a brick wall for each other. Love does not exist on the surface.
Competing is fun. Mastering your craft is amazing. However, building relationships and connections with teammates are where sustainable joy and passion live. What are you doing to build a culture of love, honesty, selflessness, and vulnerability?
If athletes generally have trouble communicating, how can we expect that they would communicate with each other at a more intimate level to build stronger connections? Connections that fuel passion! And relationships that produce selflessness and love.
The level of commitment we ask of high school and youth athletes is unprecedented. A JOB!! We better learn how to create an environment of JOY and PLAY into the equation while asking them to do their JOB!! If not, we will eventually destroy the intent of youth and HS sports.
